Jacy Maranhao's Viral Celebration and Offside Incident

For a few surreal seconds at Couto Pereira, Coritiba captain Jacy Maranhao simply ceased to exist.

One moment he was the unlikely hero, a defender wheeling away after scoring against Chapecoense in the 2026 Brasileirao. The next, he launched himself over the advertising boards in an explosion of joy, cleared the barrier – and vanished straight down the open mouth of the players’ tunnel.

The celebration turned into a disappearing act.

The footage rocketed around social media: Jacy leaping the perimeter, dropping out of sight, then re-emerging from the tunnel entrance, scrambling back up the steps, stumbling onto the pitch and trying to pick up his celebration where he’d left off. His teammates, half-laughing and half-shocked, rushed toward him as the stadium buzzed with disbelief.

Then came the second twist.

VAR stepped in. The goal that had sent Jacy flying into the void was ruled offside.

From delirium to a fall, then to nothing on the scoreboard. All in a matter of minutes.

Jacy, a defender not exactly accustomed to seeing his name on the scoresheet, admitted afterward that he had simply lost himself in the moment. He said he had been trying to reach his pregnant wife in the stands, misjudging the layout and forgetting that the access to the underground tunnel lay just beyond the boards on that side of the pitch.

“When I jumped,” he told local media, “you know that feeling when you dream you're falling from a building? That's what it was like.”

The description fits the images. It is the kind of drop that makes even seasoned professionals wince when they watch the replay.

The tunnel entrance at Couto Pereira is normally shut during play and only opened at the end of each half. This time, timing betrayed him. The incident came just before halftime, with the access already opened for the interval. One step too far, and gravity did the rest.

At first, it seemed like a scare and a viral clip rolled into one. During the second half, though, the pain in Jacy’s foot worsened. He struggled to put weight on it and was eventually substituted. Coritiba still found a way to finish the job, beating Chapecoense 2-1 and banking the points while their captain watched the closing stages from the sidelines.

On Monday, Jacy moved to calm the concern.

“At first it was more of a scare than anything else,” he wrote on social media. “During the match my foot was quite painful and I couldn't really put weight on it, but today I'm feeling much better and recovering well.”

The relief was clear. The fall could have been far worse.

Couto Pereira, oddly, has seen this movie before. In 2014, Cameroonian striker Joel Tagueu also disappeared into the same tunnel while celebrating a goal for Coritiba. Different year, different player, same treacherous gap between ecstasy and thin air.

For Jacy, the night will live on as a cautionary tale and a meme rolled into one: the defender who finally scored, celebrated like a man who knew chances like this don’t come often – and literally fell off the edge of the moment.

The goal didn’t stand. The win did. And the captain, shaken but smiling through the pain, now has time to heal and reflect on a question every defender might quietly ask themselves the next time the ball hits the net: how far is too far when joy takes over?
