Ireland's Jason Knight Voices Opposition to Upcoming Israel Match

Jason Knight has become the first Republic of Ireland player to openly say the upcoming match against Israel should not take place. His statement came after Ireland's 1-0 loss to Kosovo in Pristina, ahead of a team discussion scheduled for Friday regarding Sunday’s controversial game in Debrecen.

This fixture, already stirring strong emotions despite the two nations not being in conflict, is set to be replayed as Ireland's home game behind closed doors once again, this time in the small Serbian town of Backa Topola on October 4.

The Stop The Game protest movement has gained momentum, urging a boycott of the match due to the ongoing devastating conflict in Gaza. UEFA has permitted Israel to continue participating despite an independent UN commission accusing Israel of genocide in Gaza.

Knight Addresses the Team’s Difficult Position

Speaking candidly, Knight expressed the challenges faced by manager Heimir Hallgrimsson and the squad. “Look, it’s difficult, the manager, and Dara, and Nathan [Collins] spoke well about it, I don’t think the game should be going ahead but it is going ahead,” Knight said. “We’ll have a deeper talk about it and what that means, we’ll get our thoughts as a group and go from there.”

He continued, “It’s obviously big talk in Ireland. I’ve been focusing on my football in England’s Championship, but I knew this was coming so I had a think about it. We had chats with players, especially senior ones, on what the next steps will be. Now we’re here, we can have a really in-depth talk about what that means and what the consequences are. We’ll do that on Friday and go from there.”

Knight added, “I’m quite experienced. None of us have gone through this before but I’d like to think I’ve got thick skin and can get through most things. I’ll try to focus on football as much as possible. I’ll share my views when I see fit, but mostly I’ll focus on the game.”
