Inter Milan Signs Curtis Jones for $40 Million
Inter Milan have struck a $40 million agreement to sign Liverpool midfielder Curtis Jones, prising a homegrown talent away from Anfield as both clubs reset for the new season.
Multiple outlets, including The Athletic, ESPN and Sky Sports, reported the deal on Thursday. Jones, 25, had just one year left on his Liverpool contract, a detail that always made a decisive summer feel likely. Now it has arrived.
From academy hope to major sale
Jones broke into Liverpool’s senior side in 2019, the latest in a long line of academy products asked to carry the weight of the shirt. Across seven seasons he built a solid, if sometimes understated, body of work: 22 goals and 22 assists in 228 appearances for the Reds.
Last season he delivered three goals and three assists in 49 outings in all competitions. Not headline numbers, but the trust of successive managers kept him involved across league, cups and Europe, a reliable cog in a squad constantly chasing trophies.
Yet the signs of a parting had been there. Jones did not feature in Liverpool’s last two friendlies, both Sunday fixtures against Como and Monaco. At this stage of pre-season, absence usually speaks loudly.
Two giants, two openers, one new chapter
Liverpool now move into their Premier League opener against Newcastle on Sunday at 11:30 a.m. EDT in Newcastle upon Tyne without a midfielder who has been part of the furniture for half a decade.
Inter Milan, meanwhile, are about to unveil their new signing to a fanbase that has grown used to smart, opportunistic business. They begin their Serie A campaign at home to Monza on Saturday at 12:30 p.m., with Jones arriving as another technical option in a midfield already rich with experience.
For Liverpool, this is the end of a long academy story. For Inter, it is the start of a $40 million bet that Curtis Jones is ready to step into a bigger role on a new stage.
