India Tops West Indies in Highest ODI Run Chase with Gill's 223 and Rohit's Century
India Achieves Unprecedented Victory in Guwahati
At Barsapara Cricket Stadium, India pulled off a remarkable win by chasing down a massive target of 406 runs against West Indies in the second ODI. The match ended with India securing an eight-wicket victory, setting a new record for the highest successful run chase in ODI cricket.
West Indies Set a High Bar with Their Innings
West Indies posted their highest-ever ODI total of 405 for seven wickets. This innings was highlighted by three centuries, a first in their history:
- John Campbell: 101 runs off 68 balls, including nine fours and five sixes
- Shai Hope: 104 runs from 94 deliveries, anchored the innings and accelerated after being dropped on 27
- Amir Jangoo: 114 runs off 77 balls, his second ODI century with thirteen fours and three sixes
The total surpassed their previous best of 389 scored against England in 2019. The flat pitch at Barsapara favored batting, exposing India's inexperienced pace attack. Kuldeep Yadav was the standout bowler for India, taking 2 wickets for 65 runs.
Record-Breaking Chase Led by Shubman Gill and Rohit Sharma
Chasing over 400, the Indian openers started aggressively. They built a partnership of 255 runs, the second-highest opening stand for India in ODIs, before Rohit Sharma was dismissed for 101.
- Rohit Sharma: Scored his 35th ODI century off 75 balls, hitting 10 fours and 6 sixes with a strike rate of 134.67. He reached his hundred in 72 deliveries, making it his second-fastest ODI century. Sharma became only the third Indian to reach 12,000 ODI runs, joining Virat Kohli and Sachin Tendulkar. At 39 years and 153 days old, he is now the oldest player to score an ODI century in India, breaking Sunil Gavaskar's record. He was out LBW to Jayden Seales at the score of 255/1 in 26.2 overs.
- Shubman Gill: The captain's unbeaten 223 runs came off 133 balls, making it the highest individual score by an Indian captain in ODIs and the fastest double century ever, achieved in 117 balls. Gill became only the second player in ODI history to score multiple double hundreds after Rohit Sharma. His innings helped seal the match with 39 balls remaining.
After Rohit's dismissal, Virat Kohli joined but was out for 29 attempting an aggressive shot. With Ruturaj Gaikwad unbeaten on 31, Gill ensured India's victory.
