How to Become a FIFA World Cup 2026 Volunteer: Everything You Need to Know

The 2026 FIFA World Cup is shaping up to be the biggest sporting event in history — and if attending as a fan isn't enough, there is another way to be part of it. FIFA is recruiting up to 20,000 volunteers across all three host nations, and applications are open now.

What Does a FIFA Volunteer Actually Do?

The FIFA Volunteer Programme covers an enormous range of roles across all 16 host cities. From stadium operations and fan experience to media support, transportation logistics, hospitality and language assistance — volunteers are essential to keeping a tournament of this scale running smoothly. If you have a specific skill set or language ability, there will almost certainly be a role that fits.

How to Apply

Applications are submitted through the official FIFA Volunteer Platform at volunteer.fifa.com. The process works as follows:

  1. Create an account on the FIFA Volunteer Platform
  2. Complete your profile — include relevant experience, languages spoken, availability and preferred host city
  3. Select your host city of choice
  4. Complete any required training — FIFA provides both online and in-person modules for selected candidates
  5. Wait for confirmation — successful applicants receive an official invitation to join the volunteer team

One important condition: FIFA expects volunteers to be based in or near their chosen host city, or already planning to be in the area during the tournament window.

What Are the Perks — and What Isn't Covered?

FIFA does not pay volunteers, and travel, accommodation and visa costs are not covered. This is standard practice for major sporting events and worth factoring in before you apply.

What volunteers do receive: an official uniform, meals during shifts, and the kind of behind-the-scenes access to a World Cup that most football fans could only dream of.

Where Are Volunteers Needed?

Opportunities are available across all 16 host cities:

  • Canada: Toronto, Vancouver
  • Mexico: Mexico City, Guadalajara, Monterrey
  • USA: New York/New Jersey, Los Angeles, Dallas, Atlanta, Miami, Boston, Philadelphia, San Francisco Bay Area, Kansas City, Houston, Seattle

Competition for places will be significant given the prestige of the tournament, but with 20,000 positions to fill across three countries and 16 cities, the opportunities are genuinely broad. Keeping an open mind about which roles and cities you are willing to consider will significantly improve your chances of being selected.

The tournament runs from June 11 to July 19. If you want to be part of it from the inside, the time to apply is now.
