Holger Rune's Return to ATP Tour: Japan Open Opponents Revealed
After nearly a year sidelined with a torn Achilles tendon, Holger Rune is ready to compete again on the ATP Tour. His comeback began just over a week ago at the Davis Cup, where he won both his matches representing Denmark against Bulgaria, defeating Iliyan Radulov and Grigor Dimitrov.
The 23-year-old Dane, who reached as high as No. 4 in the world rankings, has seen his ranking drop to 188th due to his absence. Now, he aims to climb back up starting in Tokyo at the Japan Open, where a tough field awaits.
Rune’s Path at the 2026 Japan Open
- First Round: Faces French player Kyrian Jacquet for their first-ever meeting.
- Second Round: Likely to face either Casper Ruud or Luciano Darderi.
- Quarterfinals: Potential opponents include Taylor Fritz or Lorenzo Musetti, both players Rune has defeated before.
- Semifinals: The defending champion Carlos Alcaraz stands as the probable challenge.
- Final: Could face US Open semifinalist Frances Tiafoe or rising star Rafael Jodar if he advances.
This marks Rune’s third time competing at the Japan Open. In 2024, he reached the semifinals but lost a close match to Arthur Fils. Last year, he made it to the quarterfinals and will be defending 100 ATP points this season.
Following the Japan Open, Rune must defend 200 points at the Shanghai Masters, where he reached the quarterfinals in 2025. Later at the Stockholm Open, where he suffered his injury, he will defend another 100 points from his semifinal performance.
