Hamburg Signs Bilal Nadir from Marseille for Midfield Rebuild

Hamburg have dipped into Ligue 1 to land their next cornerstone, signing Moroccan midfielder Bilal Nadir on a free transfer from Olympique Marseille and handing him the number 4 shirt as a statement of intent.

The 20-year-old becomes the club’s second arrival of the summer after forward Patson Daka, a clear sign that the German side are reshaping the spine of their team with youth, mobility and technical polish.

The deal was confirmed on Hamburg’s official X account, with the club announcing that Nadir had joined on a long-term contract after leaving Marseille at the end of his deal. The move was wrapped up at the team’s training camp in Austria, where the midfielder passed his medical and then signed in front of club officials before immediately linking up with his new teammates.

“I am very happy to become a Hamburg player, and I can't wait to meet the club's fans and play for this city,” Nadir said after signing, a simple line that still carried the energy of a player eager to step into a bigger role.

Inside the club, there is little doubt about why they moved so decisively.

“Bilal is a versatile player who can fill several roles in midfield. His arrival gives us greater flexibility, and he also has a calm personality and fits in with our style of play and our values,” said sporting board member Kathleen Kruger, underlining that this is as much a cultural fit as a tactical one.

Sporting director Claus Costa went further in his assessment, highlighting the technical and artistic quality of the left-footer, who stands at 1.86 metres. Hamburg see a rare profile: tall, composed, and comfortable on the ball, with the range to operate across the middle of the pitch.

Nadir’s journey to northern Germany has moved quickly in recent years. Born in Nice on 28 November 2003, he came through the academy at his hometown club before Marseille snapped him up in the summer of 2021. It was on the south coast that his game began to sharpen under greater pressure and expectation.

He broke into Marseille’s first team in 2023 and, despite his age, went on to rack up 53 official appearances for the club. Two goals and five assists only tell part of the story; he also featured on the European stage, with four outings in the Champions League and two in the Europa League, gaining exposure to high-tempo, high-stakes football that Hamburg will expect him to draw on in the Bundesliga grind.

His rise has not gone unnoticed at international level. Morocco called him into the senior squad in March 2025, a nod to his potential and his growing reputation, although he is still waiting for his first full cap. Before that, he had already worn the Moroccan shirt at under-23 level and represented several French youth national teams, a dual-track development that sharpened his tactical understanding and adaptability.

Now the focus shifts to how quickly he can translate that promise into authority in Hamburg’s midfield. A long-term contract, the number 4 on his back, and a club openly talking up his versatility: Nadir has been brought in to be more than just depth.
