Legal Expert Explains How Erling Haaland and Man City Stars Could Leave on Free Transfers After Guilty Verdict
Manchester City faces a possible wave of departures from its top players after the Premier League ruled the club guilty in a major financial misconduct case. A respected legal expert has indicated that stars like Erling Haaland might have grounds to terminate their contracts without transfer fees.
Guilty Verdict Raises Contract Uncertainty
The Premier League's independent commission found Manchester City guilty on 114 out of 115 charges, citing breaches such as fake commercial contracts from 2009 to 2018. This verdict has thrown the futures of key players into question as the club denies wrongdoing and plans to appeal.
With uncertainty surrounding the club’s situation, legal specialists suggest players could invoke employment law to end their contracts early and leave as free agents.
Employment Law and Contract Termination
On the "Stick to Football" podcast, sports barrister Paul Gilroy KC discussed how City players might respond legally. When asked if players unaware of boardroom issues could leave, Gilroy confirmed it’s possible.
"Definitely, yes, good question, that, on the players’ perspective," Gilroy said. "Every employment contract, whether for a footballer or someone working in a shop, includes an implied term — trust and confidence."
"If that trust is broken, say by being called a liar or thief, the relationship can’t continue. A player could claim their employer breached this implied term and say, ‘I’m ripping up my contract and walking out.’"
Rival Clubs Eye Potential Opportunities
The idea of acquiring elite players without paying huge fees sparked lighthearted comments during the podcast. Former Liverpool defender Jamie Carragher joked about signing Haaland for free, and Gilroy replied, "Yeah, why not?"
Arsenal legend Ian Wright also quipped that Haaland might want to join his former club in North London, highlighting how the transfer landscape could shift dramatically if City players gain the right to end contracts.
Appeal Looms, Future Unclear
Manchester City must submit their appeal against the verdict by Friday. The outcome will determine any penalties and shape the future of the squad. Meanwhile, manager Enzo Maresca and the team focus on their performances amid this off-field turmoil.
Until the appeal concludes, the possibility of players terminating contracts and leaving the club remains a significant cloud over City's prospects.
