Gallagher Secures Draw for Spurs in Getafe Friendly
Conor Gallagher needed one clean swing of his right boot to keep Tottenham’s summer rhythm intact.
In a behind-closed-doors friendly reduced to 35 minutes each way at the club’s training ground, the midfielder struck a smart second-half equaliser to secure a 1-1 draw with Getafe and extend Spurs’ unbeaten preseason run to five games.
De Zerbi shows his hand
This was no throwaway run-out. Roberto De Zerbi used the controlled environment to roll out several of his headline additions, with Sandro Tonali, Jan Paul van Hecke and Andy Robertson all starting. Archie Gray, still only in the early chapters of his Spurs career, wore the captain’s armband and directed traffic from the middle.
Tottenham moved the ball with intent, but clear chances were scarce. The best of the first half arrived right on the whistle: Robertson, already a familiar menace from dead balls, whipped in a free-kick and Ben Davies rose to meet it, his header flashing agonisingly close to the opener. It was the closest Spurs came before the break.
Getafe strike first
The pattern barely shifted after half-time. Mikey Moore stretched but couldn’t quite convert a chance soon after the restart, then Richarlison climbed to meet a set-piece delivery, his header forcing David Soria into a sharp save.
Just when Tottenham looked to be tightening the screw, Getafe landed the first blow. The Spanish side, who finished seventh in LaLiga last season, pieced together the move of the match as Alberto Risco played a neat one-two and then coolly beat Antonín Kinsky in the 55th minute.
A reminder that even in a 70-minute practice match, switch off and you get punished.
Gallagher levels it up
The response was swift. Ten minutes after falling behind, Spurs worked the ball into Richarlison’s feet on the edge of the box. The Brazilian held his ground, the ball broke, and Gallagher arrived with perfect timing to sweep home the equaliser on 60 minutes.
It was a finish that matched the tempo De Zerbi wants from his midfield: late into the area, decisive, no hesitation.
Spurs pushed for a winner in the closing stages, again leaning on Richarlison’s aerial threat. Another header from the forward forced Soria into action once more, the Getafe goalkeeper standing firm to preserve the draw.
The whistle went on a 1-1 that will never trouble the record books, but it offered something more valuable for Tottenham: new faces bedded in, the captain of tomorrow tested, and an unbeaten preseason still intact as the real games edge closer.
