Galatasaray's Bold Move for Bruno Fernandes

Galatasaray are attempting one of the boldest moves of the summer: prising Bruno Fernandes away from Manchester United with a huge double offer that would make him the undisputed star of Turkish football.

The reigning Super Lig champions are, according to The Telegraph and journalist Ben Jacobs, preparing a €50m (£42.8m) bid to United and a four-year contract for the Portugal international that would transform his earnings.

Galatasaray’s big swing

Galatasaray president Dursun Özbek is described as “determined” to land Fernandes, and the package on the table underlines just how serious the club are.

The proposed deal:

  • A four-year contract worth €21m (£18.3m) net per season
  • A €4m signing-on bonus
  • The benefit of Turkey’s favourable tax system, which would effectively allow Fernandes to double his current take-home pay

At 31, Fernandes is entering the final 12 months of his existing United deal, believed to be worth around £200,000 a week. United do hold an option to extend that contract by a further year, but the lack of a fresh long-term agreement has alerted ambitious clubs across Europe and beyond.

Saudi Pro League sides were the first to truly test his resolve. Al-Hilal tried to lure him away from Old Trafford last summer with a colossal salary proposal. He turned them down, choosing instead to stay and chase more major honours with United.

Now it is Galatasaray’s turn to tempt him with the kind of money and status that would make him the centrepiece of their project at Rams Park.

United’s stance: captain not for sale

There is one major problem for the Turkish champions: Manchester United do not want to sell.

The Telegraph, BBC Sport and Jacobs are all aligned on this point. United have no intention of cashing in on their captain this summer, even if a sizeable offer lands on the table.

Inside Old Trafford, Fernandes is viewed as a cornerstone of Michael Carrick’s squad. The plan is to keep building a competitive side around him, not to start over without their most influential playmaker.

BBC Sport also stress that Fernandes himself is not agitating for a move. His priority remains to stay at United. He is said to be fiercely loyal to the club, fully aware he could earn far more elsewhere but still driven by the challenge of winning with the Red Devils.

Career crossroads, but not yet

The financial logic of a move to Turkey or Saudi Arabia is obvious. Fernandes could, at some point, choose a more lucrative league to maximise his final big contract and further secure his family’s future.

For now, though, he believes he still has plenty to offer at the highest level in both the Premier League and the Champions League. That belief is shared by United, who see him as central to any short-term revival and longer-term rebuild.

TEAMtalk reported last week that United will keep Fernandes this summer despite growing interest, and the latest reports only reinforce that position.

Galatasaray are swinging hard. The money is huge, the ambition clear. But unless something dramatic changes in Manchester, this looks like a battle they will lose – at least this year.
