Francesco Totti Confirms Offers from Top European Clubs for a Potential Comeback at 48

It sounds unbelievable, but Francesco Totti, the 2006 World Cup-winning Italian legend, revealed that he received offers to return to professional football at the age of 48. Despite retiring in 2017, several clubs reached out with serious inquiries about bringing him back on the pitch.

Offers from Genoa and Como

Totti disclosed in his autobiography Oltre that in October 2024, both Genoa and Como expressed interest. He declined the offers, explaining his reasons clearly. Genoa’s coach, Alberto Gilardino, was also a 2006 World Cup winner, aged 42 at the time, while Cesc Fàbregas was on Como's bench at 37. Totti would have been notably older than both, six years older than Gilardino and eleven years above Fàbregas.

"These are not fairy tales, this is the plain truth," Totti emphasized. Genoa initiated contact directly with those managing the club, showing genuine intent about the potential signing.

Training and Diet Changes Ahead of Potential Comeback

He took time deciding, even restarting training and adjusting his diet strictly — cutting out bread, sweets, and other indulgences. He admitted that giving up sweets was particularly tough. Physically, the training felt manageable despite natural aches from approaching 50 years old. Totti pushed himself like a professional but confessed to moments of doubt during the process.

"My head said I could say yes, my heart said no. Then the roles reversed: my thoughts put on the brakes and my pulse sped up," he shared.

Loyalty to Roma Shaped His Decision

Ultimately, it wasn’t age that stopped him but his deep love for Roma. "Can you even play for a team other than Roma?" he pondered. The loyalty to his former club outweighed the temptation of returning to Serie A elsewhere.

Totti explained, "Sporting betrayal knows no age, whether you are 18 or 48." This devotion was the main reason he turned down the comeback offers despite their seriousness.
