Florian Wirtz’s Liverpool future is under scrutiny again, and this time Bayern Munich are back on the horizon.
The 23-year-old, signed in a British record deal when he left Bayer Leverkusen for Anfield, is understood to be open to a move to the Allianz Arena next year if Bayern firm up their long-standing interest, according to a report from Football Insider. Liverpool, though, are digging their heels in and see a very different timeline for their £116m playmaker.
A record signing still searching for his Bundesliga self
Wirtz arrived on Merseyside with a reputation that justified the fee. At Leverkusen he was electric: 57 goals and 65 assists in 197 games, 122 goal contributions that made him one of Europe’s most coveted creators.
Liverpool expected that same production line. It has not materialised.
Seven goals and 11 assists in 55 appearances tell the story of a player still wrestling with his new environment. A contribution just over once every three games is respectable, but it is a clear step down from the relentless output he delivered in Germany.
Criticism has followed. Jamie Carragher has been particularly blunt, arguing this weekend that Wirtz is already operating at his ceiling at Anfield and that level, in his view, is not enough to justify a regular place in the side.
The debate has only fuelled talk of an exit.
Bayern temptation grows as doubts mount

The source believes that if Bayern make a concrete offer, Wirtz would want the move, convinced he would fit far better into Vincent Kompany’s system in Munich.
For Liverpool, the equation is more complicated. They invested heavily and are stuck between the size of the fee and the player’s current impact.
Liverpool’s stance: patience, not panic
Inside Anfield, the message is very different to the noise around Wirtz’s future.

There is context to his numbers, too. His combined goals and assists in his first 55 games for Liverpool actually surpass those posted by Martin Odegaard over his first 55 appearances for Arsenal, a useful reminder that adaptation curves are rarely identical and often unpredictable.
Bayern wait, critics circle
Bayern, though, are not going away. Their admiration for Wirtz has not dimmed despite his uneven first campaign in England. They are watching closely, aware that his situation could become far more volatile if this season fails to ignite.
The external verdicts remain harsh. Gary Neville recently claimed Wirtz “needs a rocket up him” after an anonymous display on the opening weekend. Others inside the game have suggested his struggles are being exacerbated by three “scared” teammates around him, with the German accused of trying too hard to force the issue and prove his worth.
So Wirtz sits in a curious place: one of the most expensive players in Liverpool’s history, a lightning rod for pundit criticism, a talent Bayern still covet, and a project Liverpool insist they are not ready to abandon.
