FIFA Confirms Gianni Infantino's Re-election Bid Despite Rising Opposition
Infantino Committed to Another Term Amidst Controversy
Gianni Infantino, the current FIFA president, has made it clear he will seek re-election in 2027 despite mounting opposition and legal challenges. The 56-year-old leader remains steadfast in his ambition to continue leading world football's governing body for another four years.
FIFA Stands Behind Its President
FIFA officially confirmed to The Athletic that Infantino will run for a third term. A spokesperson said, "The FIFA President announced in April that he will stand for re-election in 2027. Of course, nothing has changed. Mr Infantino will be standing for re-election." This statement comes amid growing unrest within football's top ranks.
Fallout from the FIFA Forward Enterprise Scheme
The controversy around Infantino's leadership centers on the failed FIFA Forward Enterprise (FFE) initiative. This plan aimed to sell minority stakes in the commercial and event operations of both the men's and women's World Cup to private investors. Its unveiling sparked an unprecedented backlash among football confederations.
- UEFA responded by announcing a boycott of FIFA competitions, rejecting the proposal unanimously and without hesitation.
- CONMEBOL, the South American governing body, declared financial decisions must prioritize football's core values over commercial interests.
Faced with this united resistance, Infantino had no choice but to abandon the FFE scheme.
Infantino Addresses Divisions Caused by FFE
"Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place," Infantino said when confirming the project's cancellation.
He also expressed a desire to reunite the football community: "Moving forward, my intent is to bring all interested parties back together in the coming days and weeks in the spirit of shared interest in our game, and with the objective to continue growing football everywhere, particularly in those countries that mostly need our support."
Ongoing Controversies and Political Connections
Beyond commercial disputes, Infantino's presidency has faced criticism on multiple fronts. Issues have ranged from soaring ticket prices at recent World Cups to perceived interference in disciplinary cases. One notable example was the overturning of a one-match ban for USMNT striker Folarin Balogun, which drew scrutiny after reports surfaced about a phone call between Infantino and former U.S. President Donald Trump.
