Fifa Opens Disciplinary Case Against Argentina After World Cup Final
The fallout from Argentina’s bitter World Cup final defeat to Spain has moved from the pitch to the courtroom, with Fifa confirming it has opened disciplinary proceedings against the beaten finalists.
The world governing body has escalated its response after a chaotic post‑match scene at the New York New Jersey Stadium in July, where tempers boiled over following Spain’s 1-0 victory. Multiple Argentina players and members of the backroom staff were involved in confrontations with Spain’s players after the final whistle, turning a night of high drama into an ugly spectacle.
Fifa last week appointed a disciplinary and ethics prosecutor to piece together exactly what happened in those fraught minutes after full time. That review has now led to formal action.
On the prosecutor’s recommendation, Argentina defenders and midfielders find themselves at the centre of the case. Nahuel Molina faces two counts of alleged assault under article 14 of Fifa’s disciplinary code, while Leandro Paredes has been cited for three counts under the same article. Assistant coach Roberto Ayala has also been charged with one count of alleged assault.
The scrutiny on Molina does not end there. He may also be punished for one count of alleged unsporting behaviour, again under article 14, as Fifa widens its lens from physical altercations to conduct that fell short of the standards it demands on the world stage.
He is not alone. Team-mate Thiago Almada and Spain midfielder Gavi are also accused of breaching the same provision on unsporting behaviour, underlining that the confrontations were not confined to one side and that emotions spilled over on both benches.
The stakes are significant. Under Fifa’s disciplinary code, players and officials found guilty of unsportsmanlike conduct face a minimum one-match suspension. Any offence deemed to constitute assault carries a minimum three-match ban.
For Argentina, still nursing the wounds of a final lost and a title surrendered, the prospect of key figures now missing future internationals adds another layer of damage from a night that was supposed to define a generation. Instead, it may yet reshape it.
