Feyenoord’s next first-choice goalkeeper may currently be standing thousands of kilometres away in Guadalajara.
Raúl Rangel of Chivas has emerged on the Rotterdam club’s radar, with multiple outlets in Mexico reporting that Feyenoord scouts are tracking the 26-year-old closely as the Dutch side prepares for a major reshuffle between the posts this summer.
This is not a routine adjustment. It is a reset.
Justin Bijlow is on his way to Genoa at the end of the season, ending a long-running chapter at De Kuip. Behind him, the depth chart is thinning fast: reserve keeper Steven Benda is out of contract, while Timon Wellenreuther, Liam Bossin and Mannou Berger are all heading into the final year of their deals.
The message from the squad list is blunt. Feyenoord cannot go into next season without a new, long-term No.1.
That is where Rangel comes in.
At 1.90 metres, the Chivas goalkeeper has grown into Mexico’s first-choice option, already collecting eleven caps for the national team. His rise has been steady rather than explosive, but the numbers are starting to speak loudly: 34 clean sheets in 100 matches for Chivas underline a keeper who does more than just fill a shirt.
His contract, though, makes this a serious piece of business. Rangel is tied to Chivas until mid-2028, and his valuation sits at around €6 million according to Transfermarkt. For Feyenoord, that means a proper investment, not a stop-gap signing.
So far, the Rotterdam club has not made a concrete move. No bid, no formal approach. For now, Rangel’s name sits on the scouting list, one of several options as Feyenoord map out their goalkeeping future.
But time could change the temperature of this story very quickly.
Rangel has a strong chance of featuring at the World Cup with Mexico. A solid tournament would only push his price and profile higher, potentially drawing more suitors into the race. If Feyenoord truly believe he is the man to anchor their next era in goal, waiting too long could turn a smart early move into an expensive auction.
The need at De Kuip is clear. The question now is whether Feyenoord act before the rest of Europe fully wakes up to the goalkeeper guarding Chivas’ net.
