Fenerbahce Denies Interest in Chelsea's Jamie Gittens
Fenerbahce have moved swiftly and aggressively to shut down talk of a move for Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, branding reports of their interest “completely unfounded”.
The Turkish club had been dragged into speculation over a possible summer swoop for the 22-year-old, just a year after his big-money arrival in the Premier League. Stories gathered pace on social media, suggesting the Istanbul giants were lining up a deal for the England youngster.
Fenerbahce were having none of it.
Fenerbahce hit back
In a strongly worded statement released on Saturday, the club dismissed the rumours outright and accused unnamed parties of trying to use their name to stir up a transfer storm.
“Reports circulating in some media outlets today regarding our club's interest in Chelsea FC player Jamie Gittens are completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth,” the statement read.
They went further, accusing those behind the stories of attempting to “manipulate Fenerbahçe Sports Club through false transfer claims and artificially created agendas,” stressing such efforts “will have no effect”.
The message was clear: Fenerbahce will not be pushed into any narrative they have not written themselves.
“Fenerbahçe conducts its sporting structure, transfer policy, and future planning in all branches, especially football, in accordance with its own strategy, needs, and established programs,” the club insisted, before calling for an end to the use of their name in speculative reports designed to “create public opinion and steer Fenerbahçe towards certain directions”.
The club also underlined where their attention really lies.
“Our sole focus right now is our match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League,” they said, urging supporters to ignore the noise and rely only on official club channels.
A stop-start Chelsea start
While Fenerbahce pushed back hard, the statement inevitably throws the spotlight back onto Gittens’ situation at Chelsea.
The winger arrived from Borussia Dortmund for a total fee of £51.5million, but his first season at Stamford Bridge never truly caught fire. He made 27 appearances in all competitions, scoring just once and adding five assists.
Injuries bit hard. A hamstring problem sidelined him for more than 100 days, costing him 22 games. His last competitive outing for the Blues came on January 31, a stark marker of how disrupted his campaign became.
Yet just as whispers of a Turkish escape route were swirling, a different story has been emerging under new head coach Xabi Alonso.
Alonso’s call to make
Alonso has a decision looming over Gittens’ long-term role, but his early actions suggest he sees something worth persisting with.
The Spaniard has already handed Gittens minutes in five of Chelsea’s six pre-season friendlies this summer. The winger has responded with one goal and one assist, a modest return but a sign of life after a bruising year.
Those contributions, coupled with Fenerbahce’s emphatic denial, shift the narrative. Instead of an early exit, Gittens now looks more likely to be part of Chelsea’s plans when they open their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24.
From here, the question is no longer whether he is Turkey-bound. It is whether this season becomes the one where a £51.5million talent finally plants his flag in west London.
