FC Cincinnati Signs Tyrell Malacia from Manchester United
FC Cincinnati have made one of the boldest moves of the MLS offseason, landing former Manchester United left-back Tyrell Malacia on a free transfer and handing him a long-term deal in Ohio.
The 27-year-old Netherlands international has chosen to reboot his career across the Atlantic, signing a contract that runs through June 2027, with a club option for the 2027-28 season. For a franchise intent on staying near the top of the Eastern Conference, this is not a quiet depth signing. It’s a declaration.
The club confirmed the move on Friday, underlining a clear intent to fortify a back line that has already helped turn Cincinnati into a genuine contender. Malacia arrives with the sort of European pedigree MLS sides still rarely attract in their prime years, not their twilight.
Cincinnati clear the runway
To get the deal over the line, Cincinnati’s front office had to work the margins of the MLS rulebook. The club acquired an international roster slot from St. Louis CITY SC, sending $200,000 in 2026 General Allocation Money (GAM) the other way.
That is not loose change in MLS terms. It’s a calculated spend that underlines how central Malacia is to their plans.
General Manager Chris Albright did not hide his delight, calling it the addition of a player with serious experience at the highest level. The message from the top is clear: Malacia is being brought in to start, to lead, and to raise the standard.
Leaving Old Trafford and its frustrations
For Malacia, the move closes a turbulent chapter at Old Trafford. He joined Manchester United from Feyenoord in 2022 and, early on, looked like a shrewd signing under Erik ten Hag. His aggressive pressing, sharp recovery runs and composure in possession quickly won admirers.
Then the injuries came.
Fitness problems repeatedly stalled his momentum, limiting his availability and rhythm. Even so, he still amassed 50 appearances for United, featuring in both the Premier League and European competitions. It was enough to show his ceiling, but not enough to truly cement his place.
Now comes the reset. In Cincinnati, he walks into a locker room that already leans on intensity and ambition. The “Orange and Blue” have wasted no time building hype, rolling out social media teasers as supporters get their first look at a defender who has already faced some of the world’s best attackers.
Across his career in Europe, Malacia has passed the 250-game mark as a professional. Those minutes came in high-pressure environments: title races, European nights, and hostile away grounds. MLS will test him in different ways, but he is not arriving as a project. He is arriving as a reference point.
Silverware and a winning résumé
The Dutchman’s CV carries more than just big-club logos. During his stint at Manchester United, he was part of the squad that lifted the 2022-23 EFL Cup, a trophy that ended a lengthy drought for the Red Devils and restored a measure of belief at Old Trafford.
His most recent club success came back in the Eredivisie. On loan with PSV Eindhoven in the 2024-25 season, Malacia contributed to a title-winning campaign, adding a domestic crown in his homeland to his list of honours.
The theme is consistent: when he has been fit, he has been around winning teams.
That extends to the international stage. Malacia has earned nine senior caps for the Netherlands and was selected in the Dutch squad for the 2022 FIFA World Cup in Qatar, where the Oranje pushed through to the quarter-finals before bowing out in dramatic fashion.
Now he brings that experience — from World Cup dressing rooms to Premier League cauldrons — into MLS.
For Cincinnati, the question is no longer whether they can attract this calibre of player. They just have. The real intrigue is what their new Dutch full-back can turn them into over the next three seasons.
