Cesc Fabregas Demands Striker Reinforcements After Como's Shock Win Over Napoli
Cesc Fabregas has made a clear demand to the Como board just days before the summer transfer window shuts, despite leading his team to an impressive 2-1 win against Napoli. The Spanish coach insists on adding attacking players to cope with the challenge of competing in Serie A and making their debut in the Champions League.
Como secured one of their biggest wins recently by beating Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Goals from Martin Baturina and Anastasios Douvikas brought the victory, yet Fabregas quickly shifted focus to the need for new signings before September 1. He knows well how demanding it is to play every three days, especially when also handling Coppa Italia and European matches. Talks are ongoing with Fiorentina regarding a possible signing of Moise Kean.
Fabregas Stresses Importance of Forward Line Depth
The manager was straightforward about needing more firepower upfront. "Obviously, I expect a striker," Fabregas told DAZN. "Douvikas can't handle Serie A, Coppa Italia, and Champions League all at once. You can't compete in three tournaments with only one striker. Last year we struggled a lot when (Alvaro) Morata was injured for months. We often had to play with a false nine; playing every three days at this level is tough."
Spotlight on Luis Milla's Quiet Impact
While transfer rumors swirl, Fabregas praised midfielder Luis Milla, who joined Como this summer and started his second consecutive game in the Napoli win. Fabregas believes Milla’s talents have been overlooked in Spain, where younger players like Pedri and Rodri usually steal the limelight.
"Milla is very underrated in Spain, but that’s normal. There are so many great players that sometimes others get forgotten if they’re not Pedri or Rodri," Fabregas said. "I’ve followed him for a long time. His career has steadily improved, and now it’s his time to play in the Champions League. We try to bring young players here, but I’m happy for him and many others."
Tactical Progress and Personal Milestones
This win also marked a personal achievement for Fabregas, who had found it challenging to face Massimiliano Allegri’s tactics during last season at AC Milan. The tough lessons learned helped him develop tactically.
"This victory means a lot. I learned a great deal from our recent game against Milan. Today, we read the match well. We played strongly in the first half; in the second half, we knew we faced champions, but we held firm. The quality of Napoli’s substitutes made me think they had even more changes available. It felt like being in a sauna," Fabregas reflected.
Managing Expectations and Looking Ahead
The unexpected win has naturally raised hopes among Como fans, but Fabregas urged patience and realism, focusing on the next fixtures instead of headlines.
"We have an important game against Genoa coming up. Many times, opponents will be stronger. You have to accept that: they might have an 80% chance to win, and we only 20%."
