Erling Haaland Matches Sergio Aguero's Champions League Record with Two Goals Against Porto
Haaland Leads Manchester City to a Tough 2-0 Win at Porto
Erling Haaland scored twice, matching Sergio Aguero's record in the Champions League, as Manchester City secured a 2-0 victory over Porto in their group stage opener at Estadio do Dragao. The Norwegian striker celebrated his team's grit and determination amid intense pressure on Tuesday night.
Two Goals from Haaland Seal Victory
Manchester City started their Champions League campaign with a win in Portugal. Haaland opened the scoring with a precise header before adding a second close-range finish late in the match. This result kept City's perfect start to the season intact under coach Enzo Maresca.
Haaland Praises City's Resilience
"It was a difficult fight, man against man. They are a top team, honestly they are impressive. They play amazing football so well done to them," Haaland said during an Amazon Prime interview.
He continued, "With all the pressure on us, we had to deliver on the biggest stage. I think we controlled the first half. It got a bit uncomfortable when they pushed high, but we created many chances. I could have scored more goals. In the second half, we scored and they pressed for about 25 minutes, but we held firm and finished the game."
Haaland emphasized the importance of winning tough games like this one, saying, "In the Champions League, you have to win games because if not, pressure builds and anything can happen."
Haaland Equals Aguero's Club Record
By scoring twice, Haaland reached 36 Champions League goals for Manchester City, tying with club legend Sergio Aguero as the top scorer in the club's European history after only 40 appearances.
"We demand a lot from each other and must win games. At Man City, you have to win games and trophies," Haaland explained when asked about the squad's mindset.
Regarding the team's performance in such a hostile environment, he added, "I hope the coach is happy. We won away in a tough game. The atmosphere was unreal at times."
City Looks Ahead to Manchester Derby
With four straight wins across all competitions, Manchester City now turns focus back to the Premier League. Haaland’s sharp finishing will be crucial as they prepare to face their local rivals, Manchester United, in a highly anticipated derby this weekend.
