England's Thrilling World Cup Win Draws Record BBC Audience

The intense clash between England and DR Congo during the round of 32 at the World Cup 2026 attracted the largest live audience the BBC has seen this year, with 16.3 million viewers tuning in.

Fans endured a tense match as DR Congo took an early lead and held firm for over an hour against Thomas Tuchel's squad. But England's captain, Harry Kane, emerged as the hero, scoring two late goals that propelled the team into the round of 16.

The match averaged 14 million viewers, making it the most watched moment on the BBC throughout 2026. On digital platforms, the interest was equally strong, with 10.4 million streams across BBC iPlayer, the BBC Sport website, and the BBC Sport app. The live coverage page attracted over 20 million views globally, 14 million of which came from the UK alone.

Alex Kay-Jelski, BBC Director of Sport, commented: "These audience numbers are extraordinary and prove the BBC remains the place where the nation unites for the biggest sporting events. England's dramatic win captivated millions across TV, iPlayer, digital platforms, and social media, with record-breaking tournament engagement."

Kay-Jelski added, "Whether through premium UHD broadcasts, immersive features, or top-notch analysis, we take pride in delivering moments that matter to audiences however they choose to follow the tournament, as England's journey continues."

Next Challenge: Facing Mexico in the Round of 16

England will face Mexico on Monday, 6 July at 1am, live on BBC One and BBC iPlayer. This match promises to be a tough test for Tuchel’s team, as the co-hosts have won all four of their games so far and have a strong record at the Azteca Stadium in Mexico City, having lost only twice in 89 matches.

The stadium sits 2,240 meters above sea level, giving Mexico a natural advantage due to altitude, something Tuchel has acknowledged openly. Still, with Harry Kane leading the attack, England remain a formidable side.

All World Cup 2026 matches continue to be broadcast live on either BBC or ITV until the final on Sunday, 19 July.
