Christophe Dugarry Criticizes Kylian Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Ambition as 'Childish and Pathetic'

Christophe Dugarry Critiques Kylian Mbappe's Ballon d'Or Focus

Former French international Christophe Dugarry has openly criticized Kylian Mbappe, the Real Madrid star, for publicly chasing the Ballon d'Or. Dugarry called Mbappe’s attitude "childish" and "pathetic," arguing that such a personal pursuit damages his role as a leader both for club and country.

Dugarry's Strong Words

The relationship between football legends and today’s stars often involves sharp opinions, but Dugarry’s remarks about Mbappe are particularly harsh. The 1998 World Cup winner took issue with the forward’s recent comments about his ambition to win the prestigious award, saying it shows a lack of humility and puts individual stats ahead of team success.

Known for his blunt style, Dugarry stated that campaigning publicly for an individual honor like the Ballon d’Or is beneath someone of Mbappe’s standing. He emphasized how this behavior clashes with the responsibilities expected from the captain of the French national team.

“To publicly ask for an individual award like that, I find it CHILDISH and PATHETIC. There’s nothing great about asking for it, especially as captain of your national team,” said Dugarry.

Mbappe’s Confidence in His Chances

Mbappe recently expressed confidence about his chances to finally claim the Ballon d’Or. At 27 years old, he highlighted that playing for Real Madrid, often regarded as the world’s best club, naturally places him in the spotlight for individual awards.

“I think when you play for Real Madrid, the best club in the world, people associate you with this award,” Mbappe remarked. “Maybe it’s a good year for this but people can vote according to what they think.”

A Mixed Legacy

Even though Mbappe scored an impressive 42 goals in 44 matches for Real Madrid last season, critics point to his failure to win the Champions League while at Paris Saint-Germain as a blemish on his record. This lack of major team trophies contrasts with his remarkable individual output and fuels some of the criticism he faces.

Dugarry sees this as part of a broader problem in modern football, where individual stars are often valued more than collective effort. He lamented the shift away from team identity toward personal glory.

“Football is becoming more and more individualistic, and far too often it makes me sick. Instead of talking about yourself and individual awards, you should be talking about the team, about sharing success and about the trophies you didn’t win but wanted to win together,” Dugarry added.
