United States President Donald Trump was impossible to overlook during the 2026 FIFA World Cup, especially with his prominent presence at the final match on Sunday afternoon between Spain and Argentina. Yet, the event unfolded in a way that was far from favorable for him. He faced boos multiple times, was awkwardly ushered away during Spain’s celebration, and had to hand over the trophy to a team from a nation he had harshly criticized just days earlier.
Boos Echo Through the Stadium
Trump probably expected a friendly reception, but fans voiced their disapproval loudly. The first wave of boos came during the playing of the United States National Anthem. While the anthem itself was respected, the crowd reacted negatively when Trump appeared on the big screen near the song's end. The boos only intensified later.
After the match, as Trump walked across the field and onto the stage for the trophy ceremony, fans from both Argentina and Spain greeted him with a chorus of boos. Videos captured the unwelcoming atmosphere clearly.
An Awkward Trophy Presentation
Last month, it was announced that Trump would present the World Cup trophy to the champions after the final. This decision echoed an uncomfortable incident last year, when Trump inserted himself into Chelsea’s Club World Cup victory celebration and lingered during their moment of triumph.
On Sunday, Trump handed the trophy to Spain and congratulated some players. Instead of stepping aside to let the team celebrate freely, he stayed right next to them, refusing to leave the frame. FIFA President Gianni Infantino was seen trying to gently guide Trump off the podium, but he remained smiling awkwardly.
The scene felt out of place. An Australian broadcaster even commented that the footage might be edited to remove Trump crashing the celebration.
Tense History Between Trump and Spain
The smiles during the medal ceremony hid some tension. Just days before the final, Trump publicly criticized Spain harshly. At a July 8 news conference alongside Dutch Prime Minister Rutte, he called Spain "a wasted cause" and blasted the country for its NATO contributions.
"Spain is a wasted cause. We don’t want to do any trade business with Spain anymore, by the way. I’d like to cut it off," Trump said. "Spain is a terrible partner in NATO. They don’t participate, they don’t pay. I don’t want anything to do with Spain. Cut off all trade with Spain, please. Including visits. We don’t want anything to do."
"We don’t have to trade with them. I don’t want to do any more trade with them. Make it immediately. Don’t even talk to them. They’re hopeless. Bad people."
Though his anger targeted Spanish leadership rather than the soccer team, the irony was clear. Trump had to grin and hand the trophy to players representing a country he had recently labeled "hopeless" and "bad people."
