Deschamps Criticizes Referee After France’s Semi-Final Loss
Following a 2-0 defeat to Spain in the 2026 World Cup semi-final at AT&T Stadium, Didier Deschamps expressed his frustration with referee Ivan Barton’s decisions. The France coach highlighted a contentious penalty awarded to Spain in the first half as a turning point that shaped the night’s outcome.
At the 22nd minute, Mikel Oyarzabal scored from the spot after Lucas Digne was judged to have fouled Lamine Yamal inside the box. Deschamps challenged this call, pointing out that the ball appeared to hit Yamal’s arm before any contact from Digne.
“If I say anything, I’ll look like a sore loser because we lost,” said the 57-year-old. “But I ask you: is the referee up to the task of officiating a semi-final? There’s the penalty, but that’s not all; it adds to everything else. I have nothing against the referee tonight, but ask yourselves the question.”
France Struggles With Technical Errors and Spanish Defense
Deschamps admitted Spain outplayed France in most areas. Pedro Porro extended Spain’s lead in the 58th minute, leaving a French attack led by Kylian Mbappe and Michael Olise ineffective. France failed to register a close-range shot until late in the match, reflecting their inability to break down Spain’s defense.
“To have any hope, we needed to be at our best. Unfortunately, we weren’t. Spain defended extremely well and left us very little space,” Deschamps said. “On top of that, because we made technical mistakes, it became difficult to create problems for them. Our technical level was below what we’d shown in previous matches.”
He also noted Spain’s superior reading of the game and ability to intercept passes, which kept France from finding solutions. Deschamps refused to dismiss the quality of Spain’s performance but emphasized that France was not at its peak on this occasion.
Mbappe Points to Tactical Flaws in Midfield Battle
Kylian Mbappe, France’s captain, criticized the team’s tactical approach, especially regarding midfield control. He felt that Spain’s playmakers had too much freedom, partly because of poor communication and pressing strategies from France.
“We were three against two in midfield and against Spain, that’s hard. Fabian Ruiz and Rodri had plenty of time to play. There was a lack of communication on the press,” Mbappe explained. “I think we should have done man-to-man press and forced them to run with us. We didn’t play the game we wanted, technically or tactically. When you don’t do what you have to do in a World Cup semi-final, you don’t win.”
An End of an Era for Deschamps
This loss signals the end of Didier Deschamps' notable 14-year tenure as France’s head coach. Despite the setback, he reflected on the team’s consistent achievements, including winning the 2018 World Cup and reaching the 2022 final.
“We didn’t control things well enough. The opponent forced us into mistakes,” Deschamps said. “But this was a World Cup semifinal. For two of our players, it was their first one. That doesn’t take away from what we did well before this. I don’t want to diminish everything that had been accomplished.”
With reports linking Zinedine Zidane to the managerial role post-tournament, France now looks ahead to the third-place playoff in Miami, aiming to finish their campaign on a strong note.
