Derby County’s Young Guns Shine in 3-1 Victory Over Mansfield
Derby County’s kids and fringe men did more than make up the numbers. They won a game that could easily have slipped away from them.
With the bulk of the senior squad earmarked for Burton Albion duty tomorrow, John Eustace handed the stage to academy prospects and squad players at Mansfield Town. They responded with a sharp, 3-1 pre-season victory that grew in authority as the night wore on.
The tone was set early. Derby’s makeshift XI moved the ball with purpose and found their breakthrough through a neat piece of wing play. Lars-Jorgen Salvesen bent in a superb cross from the flank and Dajaune Brown, alive to the space, arrived to convert. Simple finish, well-crafted goal.
Mansfield, though, were never going to fold. There was enough nous in their ranks to ask questions, and they quickly did. Released down the right, Michael Smith — once on Derby’s radar in a previous window — drove into the box, chopped the ball onto his left and curled a precise effort beyond the outstretched Josh Vickers. One chance, one ruthless reminder of his quality.
That equaliser shifted the mood. Suddenly Vickers was busy. David McGoldrick, so familiar to Derby fans, began to drift into dangerous pockets and let fly from range. Vickers had to produce a terrific save to keep out one of his efforts before the interval, flinging himself across goal to deny a strike that looked destined for the corner.
Second Half
The second half opened with the same edge. Smith, hunting a brace, rattled the crossbar from a corner, his effort crashing off the woodwork with Vickers beaten. It felt like a warning.
Derby rode it and hit back. From the centre of midfield, Owen Eames seized his moment, charging forward with the kind of conviction coaches love to see in pre-season. He slipped in Salvesen, only for the forward to fire straight at goalkeeper Lewis. A missed chance, but a sign that Derby were starting to punch back.
The game opened up. McGoldrick tried again from outside the box, another low drive that forced Vickers into a sharp dive at his near post. Each save from the Derby keeper seemed to fuel those in front of him.
Then the youngsters took over.
Charlie Smith, quiet for much of the first half, stepped into the spotlight. Picking up the ball around 20 yards out, he took a touch, looked up and drilled a lovely strike into the bottom corner. Clean, controlled, and beyond Harris before the Mansfield keeper could set himself. Derby had their lead back, and this time it felt different — calmer, more assured.
You could sense more goals in it. Legs were tiring, spaces widening, and Derby’s confidence growing with every attack.
The decisive punch came from another academy product. Cruz Allen, alert and composed, finished off a move sparked by Corey Blackett-Taylor’s strong work in the build-up. Blackett-Taylor drove at his man, created the angle, and Allen did the rest, steering his finish past Harris to give Derby daylight at 3-1.
For a side stitched together from fringe first-teamers and academy hopefuls, this was exactly the sort of night Eustace would have wanted: resilience after being pegged back, big saves from his goalkeeper, and two young scorers stepping up when the game tilted either way.
The senior names will take centre stage at Burton. But on this evidence, the supporting cast are not content to stay in the background.
