Chelsea's Squad Reshaping Under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea’s clear-out under Xabi Alonso is gathering pace, and the first big wave is about to hit.
A squad that has swollen to unwieldy proportions is being trimmed with intent. Eleven players have been put up for sale, and three defenders are now closing in on the exit door as the new head coach reshapes the dressing room in his image.
Alonso’s Chelsea start to take shape
Chelsea have been busy on the way in. Morgan Rogers, Maxence Lacroix, Jordan Henderson and Danny Welbeck headline a flurry of arrivals, with another deal already agreed this week. The recruitment drive has been aggressive, but so has the pruning.
The club have already banked over £100m from the sales of Andrey Santos, Marc Cucurella and Tyrique George. Even that, though, has barely dented the size of the squad. More departures are not a luxury; they are a necessity if Alonso is to find any kind of balance.
No one is pretending the cull stops there. Enzo Fernandez, Pedro Neto and Malo Gusto have all been linked with moves away. Neto, in particular, has now drawn serious interest from Manchester City. According to The Athletic, the winger is not on the protected list of players deemed “not for sale” this summer.
The same report lists Liam Delap, Nicolas Jackson, Marc Guiu, David Datro Fofana and Emmanuel Emegha among those available, while at centre-back a full reshuffle is underway: Benoit Badiashile, Axel Disasi and Trevoh Chalobah are all expected to move on.
Chalobah to lead defensive exodus
The first domino looks set to be Chalobah. A deal has finally been agreed with Serie A side Como, clearing the path for the academy product to end his Chelsea stint and seek regular football in Italy.
Once that move is signed off, attention turns quickly to Badiashile and Disasi. Both arrived with high expectations. Both are now on the brink of a fresh start elsewhere.
Journalist Nicolo Schira reports that Badiashile has reached an agreement in principle with Napoli. The proposed deal runs until 2031, structured as a one-season loan followed by a four-year contract, with a salary of €2.8m per year. Negotiations between Napoli and Chelsea are progressing over a loan with an option to buy.
Disasi, meanwhile, has been searching for a new home after his loan spell at West Ham last season. Several clubs have circled. Crystal Palace are now poised to win that race, with Schira stating that a loan from Chelsea is close, including an option to buy that could become an obligation if certain conditions are met.
If all three deals are completed, Alonso will have ripped out a sizeable chunk of his central defensive depth in one window. It is bold. It is also deliberate.
Big calls still to come
The trimming does not end at the back. The list of players available for transfer underlines how ruthless this reset could become. For some, this summer will be the end of the road at Stamford Bridge before their Chelsea careers ever truly began.
Then there is Mykhaylo Mudryk, a different kind of decision entirely.
Fresh from serving a doping ban, the Ukrainian winger made his emotional return in this week’s defeat to Juventus. Alonso, speaking afterwards, did not hide what the moment meant inside the club.
“Yes, for sure, I’m really pleased for him. It was emotional for everyone from the club to see him back, especially when I told him that before the game that was my idea, that he could play 10-15 minutes.
“He was thrilled, for sure. It was, after such a long period, to be back on the pitch, it was a great feeling for him and a great feeling for everyone as well.”
Mudryk’s future under Alonso will be watched closely. So will the next wave of departures. Chelsea are tearing down and rebuilding at speed, and the question now is not whether more big names leave.
It is how far Alonso is prepared to go to make this squad truly his.
