Chelsea's Squad Numbers for 2026-27 Under Xabi Alonso
Chelsea’s new era under Xabi Alonso has taken clearer shape with the release of their squad numbers for the 2026-27 season – and the list reads like a transfer roadmap as much as a team sheet.
Joao Pedro crowned Chelsea’s No9
The headline is simple and significant: Joao Pedro is Chelsea’s new No9.
The Brazilian takes the shirt from Liam Delap, who slides across to No12 after just one season leading the line. For Pedro, it’s confirmation of a status he largely earned last year. Fifteen Premier League goals in 35 games after a £60million move from Brighton and Hove Albion always hinted at a long-term role at the heart of Chelsea’s attack. Now the number on his back underlines it.
Alonso’s first campaign in charge will be built with Pedro as his primary centre-forward. The club have made it official.
Delap demoted, Jackson in limbo
Delap’s move to No12 is one of the more telling tweaks. The England striker arrived last summer as the new No9; twelve months on, he has been repositioned both on the team sheet and, seemingly, in the pecking order.
Nicolas Jackson, meanwhile, returns from his loan spell at Bayern Munich and slips back into his familiar No15. His situation feels far less secure. The Senegal forward is back at Stamford Bridge, but doubts over his long-term future remain. For now, he keeps his number. Whether he keeps his place in Alonso’s plans is a different question.
Barco steps into No4, Tosin pushed to the fringes
One of the clearest signals of change comes in defence.
Valentin Barco, signed from sister club Strasbourg, has been handed the No4 shirt. That number previously belonged to Tosin Adarabioyo, who is still at the club but now finds himself wearing No38. It is a sharp drop for a player once central to Chelsea’s plans, and it points towards an exit.
When a senior centre-back is pushed from a prestigious starting number into the high 30s, the message is rarely subtle.
New faces, new numbers
Alonso’s rebuild is also written across the rest of the list.
Morgan Rogers will run out in No17, while Danny Welbeck takes No18 after joining the club this summer. Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda, whose moves were pre-agreed and finally completed in this window, have been given No22 and No23 respectively, folding them fully into the first-team picture.
At the back, versatile defender Marco Palestra has been trusted with the No2 shirt – traditionally reserved for a first-choice right-back or key defender. Maxence Lacroix inherits No5, vacated by Benoit Badiashile as the Frenchman edges closer to a loan move to Napoli.
Badiashile’s departure opens a prime defensive number, and Chelsea have wasted no time giving it to a player they clearly expect to feature heavily.
Alonso’s blueprint in numbers
Look down the list and a pattern emerges. Core numbers in attack and defence are being handed to Alonso’s preferred pieces. Established players are nudged aside or pushed into the background to make space.
The squad list might look like a formality, but at Chelsea this summer, it doubles as a statement: under Xabi Alonso, reputations mean less than roles, and the numbers now belong to those he trusts to define this new era.
