Chelsea Closing in on Marco Palestra Signing
Chelsea are closing in on the signing of Italy international Marco Palestra, with the defender undergoing his medical in London today ahead of a big-money move from Atalanta.
The right-back flew into the capital yesterday, and his camp is now ironing out the final details of what is set to be a long-term deal at Stamford Bridge. Barring late surprises, Palestra will put pen to paper today.
Chelsea have outmuscled Inter in the race for the 21-year-old, turning negotiations decisively in their favour with a salary offer that left the Serie A side trailing. While Inter were prepared to go to around €2.5m per season, Chelsea have effectively doubled that, with Palestra expected to earn €5m net per year on a six-year contract, with an option for a seventh. That is the kind of commitment that signals a cornerstone signing, not a squad experiment.
The fee reflects that ambition. The numbers are still being debated on either side of the Channel, but they all point in the same direction: this is a major investment. British transfer specialist Ben Jacobs has described the deal as “in excess of €50m,” while Sky Sport Italia report an agreement worth €57m plus a further €3m in bonuses.
Atalanta, as ever, have protected their upside. The Bergamo club are set to bank the initial fee and add-ons, and they have also secured a 10 per cent cut of any future sale. If Palestra develops as Chelsea clearly believe he will, Atalanta will be paid again down the line.
From Pisa to London, via Cagliari and Atalanta’s production line, Palestra now steps onto one of the biggest stages in European football. Chelsea are betting heavily that his next surge will come in blue.
