Chelsea Reject Leeds United Loan Bid for Mykhailo Mudryk

Chelsea have knocked back an opening season-long loan bid from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk, but the door to Elland Road is very much still open.

The first proposal from Leeds fell well below Chelsea’s demands, yet talks are ongoing and the Ukraine international is understood to be keen on the move. At 25, and after a long spell out of the game, he wants minutes, noise, and a fresh stage. Leeds can offer all three.

Mudryk has already agreed in principle to leave Stamford Bridge for the season to rebuild his match fitness. He spent 20 months sidelined after testing positive for the banned substance meldonium, a suspension that only ended in July. Since then, he has been eased back into action on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making several appearances from the bench as he tries to piece his career back together.

Winger's Stance

The winger’s stance is clear: he wants to stay in the Premier League. That preference has pushed him towards Leeds despite concrete interest from Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo ownership umbrella – and several Italian sides circling in the background.

Leeds' Interest

Leeds have surged to the front of the queue for one key reason. They are prepared to take Mudryk on loan without any option to buy. That suits Chelsea perfectly. It allows them to retain full control over a player they signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m, while shifting his wages off the books for a year and giving him the competitive football he desperately needs.

Leeds' Summer Activity

The Yorkshire club have already been busy this summer. Harry Wilson has arrived from Fulham to bolster the attack, Tarik Muharemovic has been recruited from Sassuolo at centre-back, James Trafford has joined from Manchester City in goal, and Nico Elvedi has been added from Borussia Monchengladbach to strengthen the defence. They had also explored a move for Chelsea striker Liam Delap earlier in the window, but that interest has since cooled.

Other Pursuers

Leeds are not alone in their pursuit. Brentford have tracked Mudryk for years and tried to sign him months before Chelsea finally landed him from Shakhtar. The Bees remain admirers and recently viewed him as a possible target again, but wanted an option to make the deal permanent. Chelsea flatly rejected that idea, unwilling to lock themselves into a cut-price exit for a player they still see as an asset.

Coventry City have also signalled their interest, while Strasbourg remains a live possibility if the Premier League options fall away. Chelsea are weighing up sending other players to the French club as well, with midfielder Dario Essugo among those being considered for a move.

Future Outlook

For now, the likeliest outcome points away from Stamford Bridge. A season in West Yorkshire, under the glare and grind of the Premier League, is the scenario that best fits all sides. Chelsea are not closing the door on Mudryk staying put, but inside the club that outcome is seen as improbable.

The next offer from Leeds will show just how badly they want him – and how much Chelsea still believe in the winger they once viewed as a cornerstone of their future.
