Chelsea Nears £16.3 Million Deal for Defender Pep Chavarria
Chelsea are closing in on another piece of Xabi Alonso’s rebuild, with a £16.3million deal for Rayo Vallecano defender Pep Chavarria understood to be nearing agreement.
The 28-year-old, a left-sided defender, is being lined up to compete with Jorrel Hato following Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. Chelsea have tracked Chavarria for much of the summer and there is confidence on all sides that the move will be completed.
Chavarria comes with a slightly unusual profile for a late-twenties signing at a club that once hoarded teenagers. He has only four seasons of top-flight football behind him, having stepped up from Segunda Division side Real Zaragoza in 2022, but he arrives battle-tested from a Rayo team that reached last season’s Conference League final.
Alonso wants experience. Chelsea are finally buying it.
The Spaniard’s appointment has coincided with a clear shift in recruitment. After years of scattergun spending on potential, the brief is now to sign players who can help Chelsea challenge immediately. Danny Welbeck, 35, arrived from Brighton to add know-how up front. Jordan Henderson, 36, joined on Monday after leaving Brentford to bring leadership and a reliable midfield presence.
Chavarria would become Chelsea’s third defensive addition of the window as the squad continues to be stripped back and rebuilt. Right-back Marco Palestra signed from Atalanta in July, while Maxence Lacroix’s switch from Crystal Palace was confirmed last week, giving Alonso fresh options across the back line.
One position that will not change, though, is in goal. Despite links to Porto’s Diogo Costa, Chelsea are not pursuing the Portugal international and no contact has been made between the clubs. The 26-year-old, who played five times at the World Cup, will not be heading to Stamford Bridge.
Alonso is content with his current goalkeeping group. Robert Sanchez remains last season’s first choice, with Filip Jorgensen as understudy and 21-year-old Belgian Mike Penders providing depth and long-term potential.
While new faces arrive, familiar ones are heading out.
Trevoh Chalobah is set to join Como, where former Chelsea midfielder Cesc Fabregas is preparing to lead the Italian side into their first Champions League campaign. An agreement is in place between the clubs and with the player, with Chelsea inserting a sell-on clause to secure a share of any future transfer fee. Chalobah will follow Cucurella, Tyrique George and Andrey Santos out of Stamford Bridge as the clear-out continues.
All of this sits against the backdrop of a sobering reality: last season’s 10th-place finish. Inside the club, there was an acceptance that the recruitment model had to change. The emphasis on stockpiling young, unproven talent has given way to a more pragmatic approach, aimed squarely at returning to the title conversation.
The spending has remained bold, but the profile has shifted. Chelsea broke their transfer record in July to sign Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa for £117m, a statement move for a player expected to be central to Alonso’s attacking plans. Argentina international Valentin Barco arrived from Strasbourg on Sunday, adding further quality and versatility.
Piece by piece, Alonso is reshaping Chelsea in his image. Chavarria looks set to be the next addition. The question now is not whether the club are rebuilding, but how quickly this new, hardened version of Chelsea can turn expensive intent into a genuine tilt at the Premier League crown.
