Cheick Doucoure Set for Long-Awaited Return to Crystal Palace After 20 Months Out

Cheick Doucoure Ready to Return After Lengthy Injury Battle

Crystal Palace midfielder Cheick Doucoure is set to make his first senior appearance in nearly 20 months, finally ending a tough spell filled with serious injuries. The Malian international missed almost two years due to consecutive long-term setbacks but is now confirmed by manager Pierre Sage to be included in the upcoming Carabao Cup clash against Middlesbrough.

The Challenging Road Back

Doucoure's career at Palace stalled after a promising start; he was voted Player of the Year during his debut 2022-23 season but then faced two major injuries. His troubles began with a ruptured Achilles in November 2023 during a 2-1 defeat to Luton Town. After recovering enough to play 13 games, he suffered a torn meniscus in January 2025, which sidelined him again.

He worked hard to regain fitness, playing with the Under-21 squad at the end of last season and completing a full pre-season without issues. Once a summer 2023 target for Liverpool, Doucoure’s absence has been a big loss for the Eagles, who are eager to see him back in action.

Sage Shares Doucoure’s Joy

Manager Pierre Sage spoke about the midfielder’s excitement upon learning of his return. "When I told him he would be with us today, his smile was incredible," Sage said. "I think his reaction was as if I gave him $1 million. That kind of joy shows how much he loves this game. The only thing he wanted was to come back with the team." Sage confirmed Doucoure will get some minutes in Tuesday’s Carabao Cup third-round match against Middlesbrough, marking his first competitive outing since January 15, 2025, when Palace won 2-0 over Leicester City.

Managing Squad Rotation Carefully

Sage plans to use Doucoure but is cautious about making too many changes. He prefers not to disrupt the team’s rhythm, even in cup competitions. "I’m not really fond of big rotations because every time I did that I ended up unhappy — not necessarily with the result but with the players’ coordination," he explained. Sage stressed the importance of taking the Carabao Cup seriously, aiming for a strong run while respecting all players’ efforts in training.

Crystal Palace’s Current Form and Future Plans

The Eagles have had a shaky start to the Premier League season, sitting 13th with one win and two defeats. They want to regain the momentum that brought them significant trophies recently, including the FA Cup in 2024-25, the FA Community Shield in 2025, and the UEFA Conference League last season.

After the cup fixture, Palace will focus on their next league game against Ipswich Town, hoping to secure consecutive Premier League wins following a tight 3-2 victory over Fulham.
