Charlton Athletic Sign Kenya International Timothy Ouma on Loan

Charlton Athletic have moved to sharpen their midfield with the signing of Kenya international Timothy Ouma from Slavia Prague on a season-long loan, with an option to make the deal permanent.

It is not a punt. Nathan Jones has been tracking him for “a long, long time”, and you can sense the intent behind this move. At 22, Ouma arrives with miles already on the clock and a reputation that stretches well beyond his age.

Jones, speaking to the club’s official channels, made it clear why Charlton pushed for him. Ouma, he said, is an “athletic, technical midfield player” with “good experience” who will “add real quality” to the engine room. That blend – legs, touch, and know-how – is exactly what Charlton have been crying out for.

This is a player who has taken the scenic route to The Valley.

He broke through at Nairobi City Stars in his home country, quickly emerging as one of Kenya’s brightest young talents. From there, he earned a move to Swedish top-flight side IF Elfsborg in the summer of 2022, stepping into a league that regularly showcases and exports young talent.

Sweden toughened him up. Across three seasons with Elfsborg he didn’t just learn the tempo of European football; he tasted continental competition, clocking 13 Europa League appearances. Those nights matter. They shape a player’s decision-making, their composure, their ability to handle pressure when the ball suddenly feels heavier.

That experience opened the door to Slavia Prague, one of central Europe’s most demanding clubs. Slavia then sent him on loan to Lech Poznan last season, and that spell brought something every manager loves to see on a CV: a league title. Ouma returns to England with a champion’s medal from Poland and the confidence that comes with it.

Charlton are betting that all those steps – Nairobi, Borås, Prague, Poznan – now converge in SE7.

If Ouma adapts quickly to the pace and physicality of English football, this season-long loan with a purchase option could turn from a smart piece of business into a cornerstone signing for Jones’ rebuild.
