Carlos Alcaraz Voices Concern Over Ball Quality After Laver Cup

Carlos Alcaraz played a key role in helping Team Europe regain the Laver Cup title from Team World. He maintained a perfect record, winning both his singles and doubles matches in London. Alcaraz partnered with Jakub Mensik to beat Alexander Bublik and Taylor Fritz in doubles, securing one point. He also defeated Fritz in singles, earning two points for his team. Both players commented on how slow and challenging the court conditions felt. Mensik explained that compared to other tournaments this year, it was among the slowest surfaces he had encountered. This made it difficult for him to find rhythm, especially since his game depends heavily on serve and powerful groundstrokes. He also criticized the balls used, calling them subpar and contributing to the sluggish play.

"The conditions were pretty slow... It was really tough for me to get used to it," Mensik said. "The balls weren’t that good either; it was super slow."

Alcaraz shared a similar viewpoint but added that he personally doesn’t mind slower courts due to his style of play. He mentioned conversations with Yannick Noah and others about how tennis courts have changed over the years, becoming slower. According to Alcaraz, the issue is more about the balls than the courts themselves.

"The balls react differently on various courts," Alcaraz said. "They become bigger and change the game after just a few games. My request is that officials choose the best ball suited for each tournament’s courts."

He stressed the importance of matching balls to the surface to maintain quality and consistency during matches. Alcaraz admitted it’s uncertain if changes will happen but said he focuses on adapting quickly wherever he plays.

Looking Ahead: Alcaraz Prepares for Japan Open

This concern over ball quality isn't unique to Alcaraz; other top players have voiced similar frustrations. The ATP calendar leaves little time to adjust between tournaments and different playing conditions, a challenge Alcaraz has handled well throughout his career.
