John Barnes Highlights Bukayo Saka's Key Challenge Ahead of 2026 World Cup

England legend John Barnes has shed light on the primary obstacle facing Bukayo Saka during the 2026 World Cup. Speaking exclusively with GOAL, Barnes stressed that the winger’s goal tally is not what matters most on this stage.

After a memorable season where Saka helped Arsenal claim their first Premier League title in over two decades and reached the Champions League final, the young star now grapples with physical challenges that could limit his impact in the tournament.

Carrying Injuries into the Tournament

Saka played through an Achilles injury leading into the World Cup. His fitness concerns resulted in him starting on the bench for England’s opening match against Croatia, with teammate Noni Madueke taking the right-wing spot instead. As England prepared to face Ghana, Saka had yet to participate fully in training sessions, working separately from the rest of the squad.

Fitness Over Form

When asked if Saka remains England’s preferred option on the wing, Barnes emphasized fitness as the deciding factor. He said, "His form at Arsenal has been excellent, but it comes down to fitness. Madueke is fit right now, so he may be ahead for selection." Barnes added that quality is clear, but only fitness will determine if Saka starts.

Goal Numbers Don’t Define His Role

With only 11 goals last season, seven in the league, there’s been speculation about whether Saka needs to boost his scoring. Barnes dismissed that concern, stating, "His goal output isn’t crucial if the team wins the league. If England wins the World Cup without him scoring, it doesn’t matter." He highlighted the importance of teamwork and creating chances for others like Jude Bellingham and Harry Kane. According to Barnes, coach Thomas Tuchel prioritizes collective play rather than individual stats.

No Risks Taken Ahead of Ghana Clash

Tuchel has promised to manage Saka’s condition carefully, avoiding unnecessary strain to keep him available for later stages. After Saka contributed off the bench in the victory over Croatia, Tuchel expressed confidence that the player would be increasingly ready by the final group game against Panama. Yet, as the team trained outdoors before facing Ghana, Saka stayed indoors following an individual program.
