Bruno Guimarães Leaves Newcastle for Arsenal in £75m Deal
Bruno Guimarães is packing his bags in southern Spain and heading for London, the heartbeat of Newcastle’s midfield about to be ripped out for £75m and stitched into Arsenal’s title-chasing machine.
The Brazil international will leave Newcastle’s pre-season camp and is expected in north London in the coming days to complete a medical, the final formality before a deal that has been simmering all summer finally boils over into reality. After weeks of hard bargaining, Arsenal and Newcastle have met in the middle: the London club edging up from their £60m stance, Newcastle climbing down from their £80m demand.
For Newcastle, this is a sale they did not need, and never truly wanted, to make. Anthony Gordon has already gone to Barcelona. Sandro Tonali has joined Tottenham. The balance sheet is healthy enough. Guimarães was the one they wanted to ringfence, the player they saw as the cornerstone of a side that had tasted a 2025 League Cup triumph and back-to-back Champions League qualifications under Eddie Howe.
Since arriving from Lyon in January 2022, Guimarães has been far more than a deep-lying playmaker. He became the team’s emotional centre, the player who set the tempo and the tone. Without him, Newcastle’s win column has often dried up. Across 153 league appearances he scored 30 goals, laid on 26 assists and, with that blend of bite and elegance, turned himself into a terrace idol.
His departure will cut deep. Deeper, many on Tyneside will feel, than even Alexander Isak’s move to Liverpool last year. Isak’s exit was noisy, fractious, and left a sour taste. Guimarães’s is different: no less painful, but wrapped in a reluctant respect.
Because this is a move driven by the player. Long before Howe walked away last week, Guimarães had made up his mind. Arsenal called, and he wanted to answer. On Monday he flew to La Manga to meet Newcastle’s incoming head coach Matthias Jaissle, a chance for the new man to sell a fresh project to his captain. The conversation did not change anything. Guimarães made it clear he wanted out. No ultimatum, no tantrum, but no room for persuasion either.
The parting, by all accounts, has been cordial. Handshakes, not slammed doors. Newcastle lose their captain and conductor; Arsenal gain a midfielder ready-made for the Premier League’s sharp end.
There is one more beneficiary. Lyon inserted a sell-on clause when they let Guimarães go to Tyneside, and that foresight now pays out. They are due around £7m, courtesy of a 20% cut of Newcastle’s profit on the deal.
So Guimarães leaves the Spanish sun for the London spotlight, swapping black and white for red and white. Newcastle must now work out how to replace the irreplaceable. Arsenal, who have spent years searching for the right man to control games from the middle, believe they have finally found him.
