Brighton are on the verge of landing a significant piece of business, with BBC Sport reporting they are closing in on a six-figure deal for Manchester United defender George ahead of the new Women’s Super League season.
At 29, George sits firmly in her prime. United triggered a one-year extension in January, keeping her under contract for another season, but her push for regular minutes has opened the door for Brighton and an ambitious project on the south coast.
A winner at United, a leader for Brighton?
George arrives with a résumé that instantly raises standards. Across three years with the Red Devils, she made more than 50 appearances and played her part in United’s 2024 Women’s FA Cup triumph, a landmark moment for the club.
Before Manchester, she was Everton through and through. A product of their academy, she clocked over 100 games for the Toffees and earned three England caps along the way. That blend of top-flight mileage and international exposure is exactly what Brighton have been trying to add this summer.
Dario Vidosic has not been shy in the market. The club have already brought in Switzerland captain Lia Walti and Hammarby midfielder Emilie Joramo, signalling a clear intent to move beyond mid-table respectability. George’s arrival would bolt experience and defensive authority onto that new-look spine.
For Vidosic, a defender hungry to play every week is gold dust. For George, Brighton offer something United cannot currently guarantee: a central role, not a supporting one.
United’s reset and the cost of change
United’s willingness to sanction the move says plenty about where they are. The club confirmed on Monday that Marc Skinner has left his role by mutual consent, and the search for his successor is already under way.
