Brest Honors Éric Roy in Emotional Ligue 1 Tribute
Brest Pays Homage to Éric Roy Before PSG Clash
At Stade Francis-Le Blé on Sunday evening, tears were visible among fans as Stade Brestois and Paris Saint-Germain united to honor the late Éric Roy. The Brest coach, affectionately called King Eric during his tenure, died in June at 58 after battling pancreatic cancer. His impact on both the club and the city remains profound.
His daughter addressed the crowd before kickoff: “We want to thank the team, the Brest University Hospital for supporting Dad through his illness, and the fans—thank you for your words, songs, and messages. The love here is incredible. We’re glad he experienced this before passing. Football is about love, passion, and connection. That’s what he passed on to you, and he continues from where he is, through you and us. Thank you, long live Brest!”
Connection Defines Brest’s Spirit
“Connection” emerged as a key theme following Roy’s death. With Julien Lachuer stepping up as head coach, who was an assistant under Roy, there’s a sense of continuing Roy’s legacy rather than changing direction. This approach has helped Les Pirates start their season with promise, though they might feel five points from four games is modest.
After PSG’s narrow 1-0 win courtesy of Ferran Torres’ early goal, coach Luis Enrique commented, “It’s incredible we won considering it was our worst performance of the four games.” According to Opta, Brest’s expected points would place them atop the Ligue 1 table.
A Performance to Honor King Eric
Brest’s display was one that would have made Roy proud. Midfielder Hugo Magnetti shared after the match, “Coach Lachuer’s pre-match speech really resonated. We wanted to give everything for this great man. He’d be proud, but also tell us off for missing chances.”
The club’s mourning could have made football feel too soon this season, but the raw emotions seem to have drawn the team closer. On a night filled with tributes, Brest’s effort on the field became a fitting homage to King Roy.
