Basil Tuma Named in Malta’s Provisional Squad for UEFA Nations League
Basil Tuma’s rise continues to gather pace, with the Aldershot Town winger named in Malta’s provisional 29-man squad for their upcoming international fixtures.
The 21-year-old only arrived at the EBB Stadium in the summer, signing from Reading, but has wasted no time making an impression. Eight appearances into his Aldershot career, he has helped drive the Shots up to eighth in the table on 15 points, his direct running and energy quickly turning him into a key part of their attack.
Tuma’s journey to this call-up has been anything but straightforward. Born in Uganda, he first pulled on his home nation’s colours at the 2020 CECAFA Under-17 Championship. Two years later, in September 2022, his international path took a decisive turn when he was selected for the Malta Under-19s, opening the door to a new chapter on the European stage.
That door is now wide open. He made his senior debut for Malta in October 2024, coming off the bench at half-time and immediately making an impact by winning a penalty. Since that breakthrough, he has added seven more caps, steadily tightening his grip on a place in the national set-up.
Upcoming Fixtures
The latest squad announcement comes ahead of a busy two-week block for Malta in the UEFA Nations League. They begin with a trip to Andorra on 24 September, the first of three group fixtures that will test both depth and resilience.
Between those competitive dates sits a home friendly against Liechtenstein on 27 September, a chance for fringe players and emerging names like Tuma to stake a stronger claim. Then the schedule ramps up again. Gibraltar travel to Malta on 1 October for another Nations League clash, before the reverse fixture against Andorra rounds off the run on 4 October.
For Tuma, it is another stage, another opportunity. From Uganda to Aldershot to the European international circuit, his next steps now play out under the sharper glare of competitive international football.
