Bardghji's ACL Injury Disrupts Barcelona's Transfer Plans
Barcelona’s summer plans have been ripped up by a single twist of a knee.
The Spanish champions confirmed on Tuesday that forward Bardghji has suffered a torn ACL in his right knee, a devastating injury that not only rules him out for months but also kills any chance of a transfer before the window shuts on September 1.
He is 20. He was training for a move. Now he is staring at another long rehabilitation.
A transfer window turned on its head
The injury struck during a training session on Monday. Medical tests quickly delivered the worst possible news: Bardghji will need surgery in the coming days, followed by a lengthy spell on the sidelines.
The timing could hardly be more brutal. The Sweden international had been actively preparing to leave Barcelona this summer after talks with the club hierarchy. The message from coach Hansi Flick had been clear and, by all accounts, honest: first-team minutes would be extremely hard to find at Barça in the coming campaign.
With that in mind, the club had started to move. Enquiries had arrived from across Europe, including interest from the Premier League. Negotiations were expected to ramp up as the window edged towards its final weeks. Bardghji was on the market, and there was a path out.
To reduce the risk of exactly this scenario, Barcelona had even taken him out of the firing line. He was deliberately left out of the squad for Saturday’s friendlies against Nottingham Forest and Udinese, a precaution to protect a player they expected to sell.
The irony is savage. He missed the games to avoid injury. He tore his ACL in training instead.
A cruel repeat for a young career
This is not Bardghji’s first encounter with this particular nightmare. It is the second time he has torn the ACL in his right knee, having suffered the same serious injury while at Copenhagen in 2024.
Barcelona signed him last summer from the Danish club in a deal worth around €2 million. His debut season in Spain brought 28 appearances in all competitions and two goals, a modest return but a platform to build from at one of the most demanding clubs in the world.
Most of those minutes, though, came from the bench. And the outlook had only darkened in recent weeks. The arrivals of Anthony Gordon and Karim Adeyemi this summer pushed him further down the pecking order, tightening the squeeze on his chances of regular football.
Hence the conversations. Hence the planned exit. Hence the sense of a career about to pivot, only for the grass to give way under his right foot again.
Window closed, road ahead
With the transfer deadline looming on September 1, this injury shuts the door on any move. No club will gamble on a player facing months of recovery from a second major knee problem, and Barcelona know it.
The plan now is simple, if not at all easy. Surgery in the coming days. Then a long, lonely rehabilitation at the club’s facilities, while the season rolls on without him and the transfer market moves on to other names.
Instead of using this campaign to relaunch his career elsewhere, Bardghji will spend it trying to reclaim his own body, his confidence, and his future at the top level.
For a 20-year-old who had just been told to find a new club, the question is no longer where he will play next. It is whether this second ACL tear becomes a defining line in his story, or just another obstacle he finds a way to tear down.
