Barcelona's Transfer Battle for Julian Alvarez
Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez is turning into one of the defining transfer battles of the summer, but they are far from alone in the chase.
The Argentine forward has made it known he wants a move at the end of the season, with his camp setting the wheels in motion over Christmas. Since then, talks have quietly intensified with Europe’s elite.
Barcelona remain Alvarez’s first choice – but not at any price
Throughout negotiations, Alvarez has been clear: Barcelona sit at the top of his list. His representatives have kept other suitors updated on that stance, and the Catalan club are locked in advanced discussions with the agents and intermediaries driving the deal.
They have also been given a warning. Those close to Alvarez do not want this turning into a drawn-out saga. Barca know they must move decisively or risk losing him.
The problem? Money.
Atletico Madrid’s initial valuation stands at around €120 million (£102m / $140m). That figure stretches Barca’s already tight summer budget, especially as they also work on a deal for Inter Milan defender Alessandro Bastoni. Barcelona would prefer a fee under €100m and are exploring the possibility of including players to bring the cost down.
Arsenal, PSG and Chelsea refuse to back down
While Barcelona remain Alvarez’s preferred destination, the threat from abroad is very real.
Sources insist that the option of moving to Paris or London is not just leverage. Alvarez is genuinely open to a move outside Spain, and talks with Paris Saint-Germain, Arsenal and Chelsea are still very much alive.
Arsenal, in particular, have gone out of their way to accommodate him. Initially, they viewed Alvarez as a potential solution on the left side of their attack. He shut that down. The Argentine has made it clear he wants to play centrally. Arsenal have accepted that and confirmed to him that they would use him through the middle, a stance that has kept them firmly in the race.
Chelsea remain in the conversation too. Their absence from the Champions League could count against them, but they have not been ruled out. PSG, with their financial muscle and need for another attacking star, are also pushing hard.
All three – Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG – are ready to put straight cash on the table. No makeweights. No complicated swaps. Just a clean deal.
Atletico’s stance: sell abroad, not to Barcelona
Inside Atletico, the picture is clear. They would like to keep Alvarez, but that would require the player to reverse his decision over the coming weeks.
Diego Simeone did not hide from the reality of the situation before Atletico’s Champions League semi-final first leg against Arsenal. Asked about the growing interest in his star forward, he said:
“I’m not inside Julian Alvarez’s head. But it’s normal that an extraordinary player like Julian Alvarez is wanted by Arsenal, Paris Saint-Germain and Barcelona.”
Behind the scenes, Atletico’s preference is equally straightforward. If they have to sell, they would rather send Alvarez abroad than strengthen a direct domestic rival. The clubs ready to pay cash – Arsenal, Chelsea and PSG – fit that plan far better than Barcelona.
So the tension builds.
Barcelona remain the dream in Alvarez’s mind, but the numbers don’t add up yet. Arsenal can offer him the central role he craves and a project built around his strengths. PSG can offer star status and financial certainty. Chelsea lurk, hoping the door opens for a Premier League return.
Unless Alvarez has a late change of heart and decides to stay, Atletico look set to lose him. The only real question now is whether his next goal comes in La Liga, the Premier League, or Ligue 1 – and whether Spain watches him from afar as he lights up another league.
