Barcelona to Leave Camp Nou Temporarily Next Season Due to €510m Roof Funding Approval

Barcelona will have to move out of Camp Nou again next season after club members gave the green light to a substantial €510 million funding plan. This money is earmarked for installing a new roof on the stadium, a project that requires the team to relocate back to the Montjuic Olympic Stadium while the work is underway. The club’s permanent return to Camp Nou is now postponed until January 2028 due to revised renovation timelines.

Temporary Relocation and Construction Details

The club's treasurer, Ferran Olive, confirmed that during the intense construction phase, the first team will play at the Olympic Stadium in Montjuic. The delays in completing the roof installation have pushed back the full reopening of Camp Nou, extending the timeline beyond earlier expectations.

Financial Package and Project Delays

Ongoing setbacks in the construction schedule forced the board to seek extra financing to keep the Espai Barca redevelopment moving forward. In a recent vote, club socios approved the fresh injection of funds to help absorb the growing financial strain caused by project delays. Barcelona explained this capital was essential to cover increased costs linked to postponements in the stadium's upgrade.

Breakdown of the €510 Million Funding

  • First tranche: €300 million aimed at finishing Camp Nou, with an expanded scope including new facilities, services, and tech upgrades beyond the original plans.
  • Second tranche: €210 million raised through two issues of Media Notes worth €105 million each; one issued in July 2026 and the second planned for October or November 2026.

This fresh borrowing pushes the overall projected cost of the stadium overhaul close to €2 billion (£1.7bn/$2.3bn).

Capacity and Future Events

Currently, Camp Nou holds 62,000 fans, but this season will see the capacity rise to 75,000 as the third tier gradually reopens. By January 2028, Barcelona expects to welcome 95,000 spectators back, with the number reaching 105,000 for the 2028-29 season. The revamped stadium will make a grand statement as it has already been chosen by UEFA to host the 2029 Champions League final.

  • Expected capacity increase (2027/28): 95,000
