Barcelona's Search for a New No. 9 Hits a Major Obstacle
Barcelona’s pursuit of a new No. 9 has hit its first major brick wall of the summer.
The La Liga champions, deep in negotiations for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, have effectively abandoned their chase for Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, a player they had ringed in red as the long-term successor to Robert Lewandowski.
Atletico stand firm, Barcelona back off
Barcelona opened with a statement bid: €100 million for Alvarez. It was rejected out of hand.
Atletico’s response was blunt and unwavering. The 26-year-old is not for sale. Not at that price. Not at any price they have seen so far.
According to Matteo Moretto on Radio MARCA, the message has finally sunk in at the Camp Nou. Inside the club, the Alvarez operation is now being described as “impossible”. For all practical purposes, Barcelona consider the deal dead.
That conclusion has not come for lack of effort. All summer, Atletico have refused to budge, even as Barcelona pushed and the player himself made clear his desire to leave. The Catalans kept knocking anyway.
Sporting director Deco even travelled to Madrid this week, sitting down with Alvarez’s agent, Fernando Hidalgo, in a last attempt to find a crack in Atletico’s position. There was hope that when Alvarez returned to training next week, he might again tell the club he wanted out and increase the pressure on Los Colchoneros.
The pressure never landed. Atletico have held their line. No negotiations, no discounts, no softening. And that, at least for now, has forced Barcelona to walk away.
Market closes in on Barça
With Alvarez slipping out of reach, Barcelona are back in the market for alternatives at centre-forward – and the options are already thinning.
Some of the backup plans have vanished almost as quickly as they appeared. Joao Pedro is on track for a new contract at Chelsea. Eli Junior Kroupi is out for months with injury. Fisnik Asllani is heading to RB Leipzig.
One by one, doors are closing.
That leaves Barcelona scanning what is left of a shrinking pool. Dusan Vlahovic, now a free agent after leaving Juventus, has been waiting for a call from the Catalan giants while Besiktas push hard to secure his signature. The Serbian’s profile fits the classic No. 9 mould, and his camp knows exactly which move they want.
At the same time, Victor Osimhen has been offered to the club. The Nigerian would represent a very different type of operation in terms of cost and structure, but his name is on the table.
Barcelona began the summer with a clear top target and a bold €100 million bid. They now find themselves back at the whiteboard, the season edging closer, the No. 9 position still unresolved.
The question is no longer whether they can prise Julian Alvarez out of Atletico Madrid. It’s who they can actually get – and how long they can afford to wait.
