Barcelona’s Nou Camp to Host 2029 UEFA Champions League Final, Wembley Overlooked
Nou Camp Secures 2029 Champions League Final After Three Decades
The 2029 UEFA Champions League final will be held at Barcelona's revamped Nou Camp, ending a 30-year wait since it last hosted the prestigious event. Despite strong bids from Wembley Stadium and Borussia Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, UEFA’s Executive Committee selected the Spanish stadium for this honor.
Wembley’s Recent History with Champions League Finals
Since reopening in 2007, Wembley has welcomed three Champions League finals, including the most recent one in 2024. The London stadium was aiming to host the event again but fell short against the newly renovated Nou Camp. Dortmund’s Westfalenstadion, which has never hosted the final before, also missed out on the opportunity.
Nou Camp’s Renovation and Legacy
Currently undergoing significant renovations, the Nou Camp impressed UEFA with its upgrades. This choice recalls memories of the 1999 final, where Manchester United triumphed over Bayern Munich with two goals in the closing minutes to secure a treble. The stadium also hosted the 1989 European Cup final, won by AC Milan.
Barcelona president Joan Laporta remarked, "This is an immense source of pride for FC Barcelona and for all Barça supporters. This decision is also international recognition for the new Spotify Camp Nou, which is establishing itself as a world-class stadium at the forefront of fan experience, technology, connectivity, accessibility, and services."
Wembley’s Role in European Soccer
Wembley has been central to major European soccer events over the past twenty years. Apart from three Champions League finals, it hosted the Euro 2020 final and semi-finals, which were delayed by a year due to the pandemic. The stadium is also set to feature prominently in Euro 2028, scheduled across the UK.
Other Upcoming Finals and Historic Hosts
The 2028 Champions League final will take place at the Allianz Arena, home of Bayern Munich. Having hosted the final last year when Paris Saint-Germain defeated Inter Milan, the stadium will mark its third time holding the event within 16 years. Since Wembley’s redevelopment, only it and Bayern’s Allianz Arena have each hosted three Champions League finals.
