Barcelona Cancels World Cup Tribute for Spain Stars Amid Political Tensions
Barcelona has decided not to hold a tribute for its eight players who won the World Cup with Spain. The planned ceremony before their La Liga match against Athletic Club was canceled following recent clashes between fans and police, highlighting ongoing political tensions in Catalonia.
Camp Nou and Rising Tensions
The club intended to celebrate these players who helped Spain secure the World Cup in New Jersey last month. Other Spanish clubs have already recognized their victorious internationals at their home openers. However, after incidents during the recent 5-0 win over Elche—where traveling supporters were reportedly attacked and had their pro-independence Estelada flags confiscated—the club reconsidered.
This reaction from authorities led Barcelona's management to halt the pre-match event amid an increasingly sensitive environment.
Joan Laporta Speaks Out
President Joan Laporta explained the decision on Wednesday, emphasizing that the current situation made celebrating impossible.
"The ceremony to honour the world champions will not take place. It is not being held in the most appropriate context. The Royal Spanish Football Federation understands the decision," Laporta said.
He also defended fans' rights to display the Estelada, a symbol of Catalan independence, describing it as part of freedom of expression and an important element for many Barca supporters.
"Football should be used to unite, not to create certain confrontations. The Estelada represents the mindset of many Barca supporters and Catalans. It is part of freedom of expression," Laporta added.
Condemning Police Actions
Laporta strongly criticized the police for their treatment of fans displaying regional symbols, condemning the violence at the Elche game.
"We condemn and reject the disproportionate action of the national police officers who assaulted Barca fans for carrying the Estelada before the Elche game. We demand that this action, once the facts have been confirmed, be met with the appropriate punishment and sanctions," he declared.
He urged that future supporter safety be guaranteed so that fans can show their flags without fear.
"We hope that appropriate punishment will help ensure that Catalans and Barca fans can carry the flag without fear of physical harm or stigmatisation by the State’s security forces," Laporta concluded.
Focus Returns to Football
Despite the controversy off the pitch, Barcelona now turns its attention back to football. The team will host Athletic Club on Thursday evening without the planned tribute but aims to continue their strong La Liga campaign after the dominant win against Elche.
