According to ESPN, Barça’s head of scouting travelled to Arena da Baixada to watch Athletico vs. Bahia in person, a trip driven by one main objective: assess the 19-year-old defender who has just broken into the Brazil national team under Carlo Ancelotti.
The timing is no coincidence. Arthur was one of the surprise names in Ancelotti’s first squad after the World Cup, jumping from domestic promise to full international in a matter of months. For that central defensive unit, the coach also called up Gabriel Magalhães (Arsenal), Jair (Nottingham Forest), Marquinhos (PSG) and Vitor Reis (Manchester City) – established names and elite prospects that underline the level of company Arthur now keeps.
Arthur is a product of Athletico’s own system. He came through the club’s ranks, made his professional debut in 2025 and immediately played a part in a major achievement, helping the team secure promotion to Série A. He did not ease his way in; he stepped straight into responsibility.
That trust has only grown. In the 2026 season, he has already played 32 matches for Furacão, starting every single one. No rotation, no gentle integration. He has become a fixture in a side that is pushing at the top end of the table.
The context around him is strong. Athletico currently sit third in the Brasileirão with 49 points, chasing only Flamengo on 60 and Palmeiras on 57. A young centre-back holding his place in a team fighting at that level naturally draws attention.
