Ronald Araujo once looked untouchable at the heart of Barcelona’s defence. Now, the club are prepared to let him walk away if he asks for the exit.
According to AS, Barça will not push the Uruguay international out of the door this summer, but nor will they block a move should he request it. Respect, rather than urgency, is driving their stance on a player who only months ago signed a long-term deal to stay until 2031.
From cornerstone to question mark
At 27, Araujo should be entering his peak. Not long ago he was widely spoken of as one of the premier centre-backs in world football, with Manchester United reportedly ready to pay big money to lure him to the Premier League.
That version of Araujo feels distant.
The defender has battled form and fitness issues, and last season he stepped away from the team for a spell to prioritise his mental health. On the international stage, the blows kept coming. Meeting with Flick and Deco

Araujo is expected to sit down this summer with head coach Hansi Flick and sporting director Deco to thrash out where he fits in the project. The defender is described as willing to stay and fight, but only on one condition: he wants to feel “important within the project”.
