Balogun Transfer Race: Villa and Barcelona Join Spurs in €60m Chase
Folarin Balogun has gone from rising prospect to the name on every sporting director’s desk this summer. After a ruthless season with Monaco and a standout World Cup with the United States, the 25-year-old has become one of the most coveted forwards in Europe – and the queue is getting longer by the day.
Tottenham Hotspur moved first. They opened formal talks over a €60 million deal, a clear statement that Balogun was their preferred solution up front. For a while, Spurs looked to have a clear run at him.
Not anymore.
According to French outlet L’Equipe, Aston Villa and Barcelona have now entered the race with concrete interest of their own. The dynamic around Balogun’s future has shifted from negotiation to full-blown contest.
A striker at his peak
The numbers explain the scramble. Balogun hit 19 goals in 43 games in all competitions for Monaco last season, carrying their attack across domestic and European fronts. His World Cup performances for the US only sharpened the focus on him, showing he could handle the biggest stage and the highest pressure.
As the transfer window edges towards its September 1 deadline, clubs that need goals – and need them now – see Balogun as one of the few ready-made options still on the market.
Villa’s contingency plan, Barça’s rebuild
At Aston Villa, the interest is strategic and urgent. The club are tracking the market closely amid the possibility that Ollie Watkins could be lured to the Saudi Pro League by Al-Hilal. If their main striker moves, Villa cannot afford to hesitate. Balogun would be their immediate, high-level replacement.
Barcelona’s situation is even more stark. Having parted ways with both Robert Lewandowski and Ferran Torres, they are rebuilding an attack that has lost experience, goals, and presence in the box in a single window. Their gaze has now settled firmly on Balogun as a centrepiece of that reconstruction, a forward around whom a new frontline can be built.
Monaco ready to deal – at their price
Monaco, for their part, are open to a sale at the right figure. The €60m asking price is no bluff. The club see Balogun as a valuable asset who can fund their next phase of recruitment, much as they did when Maghnes Akliouche departed for Paris Saint-Germain.
Spurs, wary of being left short, have sounded out alternative options, including Manchester City’s Omar Marmoush. Yet Balogun remains at the top of their list. He is the player they have pushed hardest for, the one whose profile best fits their plans.
A coach fighting to keep his star
Inside Monaco, though, not everyone is ready to let go. Head coach Filipe Luis has made no secret of his desire to keep the striker.
“He is one of our players. I know he’s going to receive a lot of offers given his last season and his World Cup performance,” Luis said recently, laying out the reality of the situation while underlining Balogun’s importance.
“He’s a special player. You don’t find many players on the market with his attributes. If he stays, I’ll be really, really happy to have him with us.”
Those are the words of a manager who knows exactly what he stands to lose.
Clock ticking towards September 1
The uncertainty has already started to bite on the pitch. Balogun sat out Monaco’s 3-2 Europa Conference League playoff win over Gornik Zabrze in Poland, even though he has been registered on the UEFA squad list. His absence only fuelled speculation that a move could be close.
For Tottenham, Villa, and Barcelona, hesitation now comes with a price. All three must decide whether to meet Monaco’s €60m valuation before the window shuts on September 1 or risk watching a rival land one of the market’s most in-demand forwards.
Balogun is expected back in team training shortly, and a call on his involvement in Sunday’s Ligue 1 clash with Le Havre is looming. If he walks out in Monaco colours again, will it be the start of another season leading their line – or his final appearance before a blockbuster move reshapes the European attacking landscape?
