Aston Villa Signs Joao Gomes for £38m Amid Ambitious Midfield Overhaul
Aston Villa have underlined their new-found ambition in the transfer market by sealing a £38m deal for Wolves midfielder Joao Gomes, prising one of Molineux’s few bright spots out of a relegated side and into a squad being rapidly rebuilt around European ambitions.
The Brazil international arrives for an initial £34m, with a further £4m tied up in add-ons, as Villa move aggressively to reshape the heart of Unai Emery’s midfield. It is another big swing, another statement fee, and another player taken from a direct Premier League rival.
Villa rip up the midfield plan and start again
Gomes becomes Villa’s second major midfield signing in as many days. On Friday, the club smashed their transfer record with a deal worth more than £50m for Freiburg’s Switzerland international Johan Manzambi, beating Newcastle to his signature and signalling exactly where they see themselves in the domestic pecking order.

The midfielder left Wolves’ training camp in Portugal on Thursday to undergo his medical and finalise the move to Villa Park, a symbolic exit that underlined Wolves’ reality after finishing bottom of the Premier League.
He was one of the few constants in a bleak campaign. Gomes made 41 appearances in all competitions last season as Wolves slid out of the top flight, a relentless presence in the centre of the pitch during a year that offered little else to cling to.
Since arriving from Flamengo in 2023, he had become a mainstay at Molineux, playing 130 times and scoring seven goals. Those numbers, in a short span, show why he drew attention from across Europe: durability, intensity, and a willingness to do the hard yards in the most unforgiving part of the pitch.
For Wolves, his departure strips away experience and energy from a squad already facing the financial and competitive shock of relegation. For Villa, it adds exactly the kind of edge Emery craves.

With Manzambi and Gomes arriving against the backdrop of Onana’s injury and Rogers’ looming exit, Villa’s midfield will look very different when the new season begins.
