Asian Games Cricket Quarterfinals Canceled by Rain, India and Pakistan Advance Without Playing
The men's cricket quarterfinals at the Asian Games in Nagoya were washed out due to persistent rain and soggy grounds. Both India and Pakistan advanced to the semifinals without bowling a single ball, their progression decided by higher ICC T20I rankings.
Matches Called Off Before Starting
Pakistan's quarterfinal against Hong Kong was the first to be abandoned as rain made play impossible. The Pakistan team moved on because of their superior T20I ranking. Shortly after, India's quarterfinal against Afghanistan was also called off just 16 minutes before the scheduled toss. With India ranked above Afghanistan on the July 23, 2026 ICC T20I list, they secured their place in the last four.
Afghanistan Player Voices Disappointment
Mohammad Akram Zazai from Afghanistan expressed frustration over the cancellation. He emphasized that his team was prepared and eager to compete, having already played twice on the same ground and familiar with the conditions.
"We came here ready to play, but unfortunately it rained. We would have loved to play against India — our players are in good form," said Zazai. "Even a few overs would have kept us in the contest. Our team is strong, even in short formats. We just wanted a chance to play."
Fans Criticize Organizers for Poor Ground Management
Supporters were quick to blame the event organizers for inadequate preparation. Many pointed to the lack of proper equipment to dry the field and poor planning given the forecasted rain.
- @Ajmalzadran18: "Absolute incompetence by the Asian Games organizers! No equipment to dry the outfield in 2026? Because of poor ground management, matches were abandoned and Afghanistan is out. Why host big events if you can’t manage wet fields?"
- @Crictologist: "Afghanistan and Hong Kong knocked out without playing quarterfinals. Shame! The pitch looked good but rain ruined everything."
- @Rajiv1841: "India vs Afghanistan QF abandoned 40 minutes before start time. This has to be a joke!"
- @Amitsinha4444: "Non-cricket country hosting with no clue how to prepare cricket matches. The outfield in India vs Japan was worse than an international test match."
- @doc_hormone: "What’s going on with Asian Games cricket? All matches abandoned."
Preparation Lacking Despite Predictable Weather
While rain cannot be controlled, many feel the organizers should have done more. Weather forecasts had predicted steady rain, allowing time to arrange covers, drying machines, and other equipment to save matches. The absence of such measures left teams and fans disappointed.
Reaching the semifinals without playing any quarterfinal cricket leaves a hollow feeling. Cricket’s future at the Asian Games depends on better organization and infrastructure to handle weather challenges.
