Arteta Hails Merino as One of the Most Intelligent Players After Arsenal’s Carabao Cup Win

Arteta Praises Merino's Intelligence and Leadership

Mikel Arteta showered praise on Mikel Merino following Arsenal's 4-2 victory over Ipswich Town in the Carabao Cup. The Spanish midfielder, who wore the captain's armband, scored during the match at Portman Road and earned high accolades from his manager despite being mainly used as a squad rotation player in the Premier League.

Arsenal Advance with Convincing Win

The Gunners continued their strong start to the season with this win. Although 16-year-old Max Dowman stole the spotlight with two goals, Arteta made sure to highlight the role of more seasoned players like Merino and Noni Madueke, who also scored. Merino led the team as captain for the third-round tie, guiding the Premier League champions through an impressive away performance.

Merino’s Tactical Prowess and Dedication

After the game, Arteta emphasized Merino's sharp football mind and selfless nature. Despite limited playing time this season, the 30-year-old has proven himself vital to the squad.

"He’s unbelievable. First of all, he’s one of the most intelligent players that I’ve seen and I’ve worked with. Then the personality is just full of… I don’t know, he just wants to give for everybody. He thinks about everything, he thinks about everybody," said Arteta.

The manager also noted Merino’s unique skill set and versatility on the field.

"He has qualities that are unique in football and in our team, his capacity to arrive in the box, he’s capable of occupying different places, to play in different positions, to link play with people. And as a midfielder, the ability that he has to score goals like tonight is a different one that we’ve seen lately, but another incredible one."

Merino Proud to Captain Arsenal

Since joining from Real Sociedad for £31.6 million in August 2024, Merino has scored 16 goals in 84 appearances across all competitions. The Spain international, capped 51 times, has had a limited role in the league this season, making only four substitute appearances. Yet, leading the team out against Ipswich was a proud moment.

"It’s a huge honour. I’m so proud, and to represent this club in this way, wearing the armband – many legends have done it before me. To me it’s happiness and I try to do the best thing I can to represent this club, and I know how big it is to wear the armband, so I’m really happy," Merino shared.

Looking Ahead: Next Opponents and Premier League Focus

Arsenal will learn their next Carabao Cup opponent on Wednesday after Manchester United's match with Brighton concludes. Several Premier League teams like Tottenham and Leeds have already been knocked out, leaving Arsenal well placed to contend for the trophy.

Now, Arteta and his squad must turn their attention back to the Premier League as they prepare for a challenging trip to Brighton on Saturday. Securing a win there will be important before the upcoming international break.
