Arsenal Open to West Ham Move for Reiss Nelson

Reiss Nelson’s Arsenal career is edging towards its crossroads, and West Ham are pushing to be the club that offers him a new start.

Talks are under way between the London rivals over a deal for the 26-year-old winger, who has spent the last two seasons out on loan, first at Brentford and then at Fulham. Nelson returned to north London this summer, but he does not feature in Mikel Arteta’s plans for the coming campaign and Arsenal are actively working on an exit.

West Ham have made their move. The Hammers, preparing for a promotion tilt in the Championship, have approached Arsenal to explore Nelson’s availability as they look to add top-flight quality to a squad built for a long, demanding season.

From Arsenal’s side, there is no hesitation. Standard Sport understands the Gunners would welcome a switch to West Ham and have given positive signals to the east London club, with Nelson now into the final year of his contract at the Emirates.

The deal, though, is far from straightforward. Negotiations between the clubs are ongoing, with the structure and conditions of any agreement still being thrashed out. One key question lingers over the whole discussion: is Nelson willing to drop into the Championship at this stage of his career?

So far, personal terms have not been discussed. Nelson is weighing up his options and has no shortage of them. Several clubs have expressed interest this summer, including Benfica, now managed by Marco Silva — the coach who brought Nelson to Fulham two seasons ago and knows exactly what he can offer.

Arsenal’s preference is clear. They want a permanent sale in this window. There have been enquiries over another loan, but if they sanction a temporary move, the club hold an option to extend Nelson’s deal by a further 12 months to protect his value and avoid losing him for nothing.

Nelson is not the only senior player who could be on the move before the window closes. Arsenal are also open to selling Gabriel Jesus and Fabio Vieira as they reshape the squad around Arteta’s core.

Jesus, linked with Napoli, has been valued at up to £20million by the Gunners. At this stage, though, no formal approach has arrived from the Italian club. Vieira, meanwhile, sits in a group of players whose futures remain under review as Arsenal look to trim and rebalance a squad built to compete on multiple fronts.

There is work to do lower down the pecking order as well. Arsenal are seeking a loan for young goalkeeper Tommy Setford, with the club keen for him to secure regular first-team football this season rather than stagnate in the shadows.

For Nelson, the picture is sharper. Arsenal are ready. West Ham are at the table. The next move belongs to the player.
